TORONTO, Oct. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- An iconic French Chateau, once owned by late financier and real estate developer Robert Campeau, is Canada's most expensive MLS listing at $35 million (Canadian), according to luxury realtor Barry Cohen.

The sprawling, four-plus acre chateau, located in Toronto's prestigious Bridle Path area, was recently listed for sale. With approximately 30,000 sq. ft. of living area, 68 The Bridle Path features 10-bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, a state-of-the-art gourmet kitchen, a two-storey indoor swimming pool with a structural floor that converts to a ballroom, a tennis court and formal manicured grounds. The property was purchased by the existing homeowners in 2002, who enlisted the architectural talent of the late Gordon Ridgely and gifted landscape architect Ronald Holbrook to create a vision of balance and proportion. Together with their interior design team, the homeowners sourced the globe for period pieces dating back to the 17th century.

"The result is nothing short of remarkable -- an authentic French Chateau that rivals any found in the Loire Valley," says Cohen, a high-end specialist with RE/MAX Realtron Barry Cohen Homes Inc. and the number one sales team in Canada in 2016. "It's European elegance in the heart of a Canadian city. From the gently sloping cobblestone driveway to the exquisite landscape, the romance of the period has been captured in every minute detail."

Demand for luxury properties in Canada overall has steadily increased in recent years, with affluent purchasers from here and abroad stimulating home-buying activity, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

"Toronto has consistently ranked as one of the most desirable cities in the world in which to live, yet the city's housing values do not reflect its world class status," says Cohen.  "We have seen an influx of purchasers from the international community seeking out our most luxury properties at a fraction of the price that they would spend in the US, Europe or Asia. To illustrate, some of the most expensive homes on the market today include a $400 million (USD) penthouse in Monaco, a Bel Air mansion at $250 million (USD), and a Regency townhouse in the UK at $103 million (USD)."

Seasoned investors are seeking out exceptional estate homes, such as 68 The Bridle Path, for numerous reasons, including future appreciation, explains Cohen.  But for many, these properties also represent a safe and sound investment strategy in one of the most politically and economically stable countries in the world.

68 The Bridle Path has a long and rich history. Notable guests have included politicians such as late Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau and celebrities Jane Fonda and Scandal star Tony Goldwyn.  Numerous films have been shot at the home including 'Kissinger and Nixon' with Beau Bridges, 'That Old Feeling,' directed by Carl Reiner and starring Bette Midler, and 'It Takes Two' with the Olsen Twins, Kirstie Alley, and Steve Guttenberg. The home has also recently appeared in an episode of Suits.

"Campeau's vision of an urban oasis was brought to fruition by the dedicated homeowners who ultimately achieved perfect symmetry in its design," explains Cohen. "After more than 15 years, however, the time has come to share their labour of love. Like many of today's baby boomers, the existing homeowners are ready to downsize."
