LOS ANGELES, Oct. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Organizers of the Los Angeles Auto Show® and AutoMobility LA announced today the theme and participants for this year's "Design & Developer Challenge," taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center on Wednesday, November 16. In contrast to previous years when advanced automotive design studios were the exclusive participants, the 2016 competition brings programmers and non-automotive companies into the auto-innovation mix.

Eleven automakers, entertainment and consumer brands have formed five teams to collaborate around this year's theme, "Autonomous Vehicles: A Redefined User Experience for 2050." Teams will explore how the intersection of technology, data, connectivity and content can revolutionize a vehicle's interior/exterior design and deliver landmark user experiences for a new generation of passengers.

This year's Design & Developer Challenge teams include:

  • CH Auto and Creative Mobile
  • Crayola and Qoros Auto
  • Fandango and Jaunt VR
  • Honda, Lego and Trigger
  • Kiska and KTM

Designers and developers must work together to create a short film that answers the following questions:

  • How will the city of Los Angeles evolve to accommodate for autonomous transportation?
  • What kinds of experiences will people be able to have within autonomous vehicles?
  • What are the vehicles that enable these experiences like?
  • How will the vehicle and in-vehicle experience fundamentally transform people's lives?

The five teams will present their concept and premiere their short film in front of industry and media professionals attending this year's AutoMobility LA (Nov. 14-17), including an esteemed panel of judges. Immediately following the presentations, the judging panel will pick the winning team based on aesthetics and function, creativity of concept, adaptability and customization potential, use of current technology, and the vehicle's place on the road within a multi-model transportation system. The experts will also take into account the business model and the feasibility of the concept to enter the market by 2050 before selecting the winner of the 2016 Design & Developer Challenge Judges' Pick award.

This year's esteemed Design & Developer Challenge judging panel includes:

  • Chris Down, Senior Vice President & Global Brand General Manager, Hot Wheels at Mattel, Inc.
  • Danny Stillion, Partner & Executive Design Director at IDEO
  • Gabriel Schlumberger, Executive Director of Creative at Disney Consumer Products & Interactive Media
  • John S. Couch, Vice President of UX & Design at Hulu
  • Richard Titus, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience at Samsung Research America
  • Stewart Reed, Transportation Design Department Chair at Art Center College of Design

In addition to the Judges' Pick (to be awarded on Nov. 16), teams will have two additional opportunities to win an honor this year. The Industry Pick award, offers industry and media professionals the opportunity to watch the entrants' videos on automobilityla.com and vote for their favorite concept. The People's Pick allows Los Angeles Auto Show attendees and fans around the world to vote for their favorite concept on laautoshow.com. Online voting will end on November 27, followed by the announcement of this year's winner(s) of the Industry Pick and People's Pick awards.

"Inviting programmers and non-traditional players to take part in Design & Developer Challenge is part of AutoMobility LA's overall mission to be a global stage for the 'new' automotive ecosystem," said Nokia Growth Partners EIR, Bryan Biniak, who is serving as an AutoMobility LA Advisory Board Member and emcee for this year's competition. "Recognizing that L.A. is the epicenter for several mega industries (entertainment, tech, automotive design, etc.), the competition's reimagined format facilitates and nurtures interdisciplinary collaboration around the design and development of future vehicles and automobility solutions."

To set the stage for Wednesday's competition, AutoMobility LA will host a panel of urban design experts on Tuesday (Nov. 15); thought leaders from Perkins+Will, Nelson/Nygaard and Lux Research will delve deep into transformative trends that are reshaping cities and repainting landscapes and will help us better understand the city of 2050.

AutoMobility LA is the culmination of a multi-year evolution of the LA Auto Show's Connected Car Expo and its Press & Trade Days into a trade show designed exclusively for the new automotive industry. The four-day event will bring together the entire "new mobility ecosystem" comprised of automakers, media, tech companies, designers, developers, startups, investors, dealers, government officials, academics, analysts, etc.

Registration for AutoMobility LA is now open. All attendees will be able to witness this year's vehicle debuts and have access to an all-new Technology Pavilion outside the Los Angeles Convention Center.
