Fairtrade Teas Now Available At The Peninsula Boutique As the Company Celebrates A Major Milestone

HONG KONG, March 8, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Tea is both a tradition and a passion at The Peninsula, from premium Chinese blends to western classics. Starting with around 20 different types of tea in 2003, the tea collection at the boutique has more than doubled over the years. As a continuation of this ritual, The Peninsula Boutique is pleased to announce that its signature tea blends have received Fairtrade Certification – the launch coincides with the 150th anniversary of the parent company, The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited, in celebrating 150 years of "Tradition Well Served".

Consumers can now choose from a wide range of Fairtrade Teas available at the boutique including The Peninsula Blend, Morning, Afternoon and Evening teas specially blended for The Peninsula, plus other signature teas such as Earl Grey, Darjeeling and selected flavoured teas. The launch of The Peninsula branded Fairtrade Teas in partnership with Teesta Valley tea estate in India is part of the company's ongoing corporate social responsibility programme, which aims to heighten the awareness of the Fairtrade movement.

Fairtrade is a global movement that works directly with businesses, consumers and campaigners to make trade work fairly and beneficially for farmers and agricultural workers in developing countries. Products bearing a Fairtrade label have been accredited for helping to promote sustainable development and secure better terms, working conditions and prices for workers in emerging nations. In addition to establishing an equitable Fairtrade price, Fairtrade donates an additional sum of money into a communal fund for workers and farmers to improve their own social, economic and environmental conditions.

Bharat Bajoria, the acclaimed international expert on all issues related to tea cultivation and distribution, is the Classic Tea Ambassador for The Peninsula Hotels. He began working in the tea industry in 1974, and today holds the positions of Chairman of the Indian Tea Association and Vice Chairman of the Tea Board of India. He leads delegations around the world to promote Indian teas, and is the author of the Special Purpose Tea Fund, a scheme to rejuvenate the Indian tea industry that was adopted by the Government of India.

Teesta Valley Tea operates tea estates in two of India's most famous tea-growing regions, Darjeeling and Assam. For 175 years, it has planted and produced premium quality teas and is Fairtrade certified to ensure sustainable tea standards. The company exports its high-quality teas around the world, including Japan, the United States, Singapore and several countries in Europe.
