Indonesian Telecommunication Operators Reveals the Market Potential of IoT Indonesia

As the largest market in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is expected to become a major player in IoT's growth in Southeast Asia.

JAKARTA, Indonesia, Aug. 4, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Asia IoT Business Platform will return to Indonesia from 15 to 16 August 2016 at JW Marriott Hotel, Jakarta, for the 9th edition of its regional series. Supported by the Ministry of Communications and Informatics, the conference and exhibition will explore various opportunities and challenges of Internet of Things (IoT) adoption, as well as feature case studies of IoT solutions implementation across sectors.

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Rudiantara, will be giving a welcoming address for the conference which is routinely held and involves all stakeholders in the IoT/M2M industry in Southeast Asia.

This event allows for an in-depth discussion related to the market potential of Internet of Thing (IoT) in Indonesia, as well as educate local enterprises on various technology that can be explored for operational efficiency. The potential is attributable to Indonesia's position as the largest market in Southeast Asia for IoT development in a number of sectors, especially in the industrial IoT, smart city (public services), manufacturing and retail, transportation and logistics, as well as banking and finance.

More than 400 participants from Indonesia and the international community will attend this comprehensive event to learn on IoT adoption and implementation, including decision makers from public sectors and local enterprise.

As a preview to the conference, a panel session was held at the Jakarta Smart City Lounge. Key leaders from local telecommunication operators and government sectors to private sectors driving the IoT and smart city initiatives in Indonesia were present, providing inputs on the current progress and sharing efforts to be taken on further.

The discussion was moderated by Abhisek Shah, Head of the ICT Committee, Amcham Indonesia; and panelists that participated included Setiaji, Head of Jakarta Smart City Unit, Arifa Febriyanti, Head of Internet of Things at XL Axiata, Hendra Sumiarsa, Head of M2M at Indosat Ooredoo, and Muhammad Azhar Zainal, Deputy Director for ICT Facilitation at the Indonesian Agency for Creative Economy (BEKRAF).

With a population of over 235 million and 297 million of mobile users, Indonesia is the fourth largest in the world, which is expected to become a major player in the biggest IoT growth in Southeast Asia.

This includes the development of industry in Indonesia where in 2030, the automotive sector is expected to reach 46 million vehicles, while in public service sector, 83 million homes will be available for 300 million people. In the meantime, in the financial sector, 4.8 million SMEs will contribute to economic growth.

Cloud service has emerged as the solution of IT strategy for most businesses in Indonesia, particularly SMEs. Nevertheless, the latest government data shows that 70 percent or around 56.5 million SMEs in Indonesia are not using IT solutions. Still, cloud computing market in Indonesia is expected to reach more than US$120 million in 2017 and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) will become a popular choice in Indonesia.

Together with the government, local telecommunications companies (Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredo and XL Axiata) encourage the development of IoT/M2M market, which is expected to reach an inflection point during the next few years.

With a mobile penetration rate of 120% in Indonesia, Indosat Ooredoo believes that CSPs (communication service providers) are trusted partners to help IoT adoption. Being in the driver seat, they want to lead the IoT development through an extensive portfolio of solutions and services ranging from connectivity, infrastructure, cloud services, data analytics to end-to-end IoT solutions and services; promoting innovation simple and open environments for local developers to build innovative IoT services; and Big Data.

During the panel discussion, Arifa Febriyanti, Head of Internet of Things, XL Axiata, also emphasized that telcos play very important roles in the IoT world; telcos can become end-to-end solutions for IoT services. "For the user or end customer, there's is no hassle for them while using an IoT solution because the telcos who take part as a solution provider for IoT can provide everything starting from the connectivity, the application, to the device and all the sensors that are providing the total end-to-end service," she added.

The panelists urged IoT stakeholders from all sectors - both locally and from abroad - to come together to help local enterprises and public sectors in adoption and implementation of IoT. Solution providers are welcome to build strategic partnerships and grow the IoT ecosystem in Indonesia.
