The export of Korean eggs had been suspended since last year due to the outbreak of AI (avian influenza) in Korea.

Having upon approval of an export license from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) of Hong Kong, Yeongcheon egg distribution center in Gyeongbuk province, Korea, exported the first shipment of Korean eggs on the 12th of last month.

The exported eggs were produced in Gyeongsangbuk-do, whereavi no an influenza has been found in Korea. The export volume of Korean eggs is about 5.8 tons (96,000 eggs), and it is expected to be sold at large discount stores in Hong Kong.

Considering the possible export of eggs which were produced in areas where AI (avian influenza) did not emerge, the Korean Poultry Nonghyup who led the Hong Kong export resumption negotiations has been in constant consultation with a Hong Kong buyer.

As a result, exports through Yeongcheon Egg Distribution Center received final approval the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) of Hong Kong.

Yeongcheon Egg Distribution Center, the distribution center of Daegu and Gyeongbuk provinces in Korea, has state-of-the-art processing facilities ranging from cleaning to inspection, screening, and packaging. It exported eggs to the Hong Kong market for the first time in February 2010. After that, it repeatedly stopped and resumed exporting with the occurrence of AI, Hong Kong exports was resumed this year while maintaining AI clean areas.

Korean eggs exported to Hong Kong this time are eggs produced at three farms in Gyeongsangbuk-do that passed the strict farm inspection of Hong Kong authorities. There are 3 types of eggs: Nonghyup special eggs, oriental eggs, and yellow earth-eaten eggs.

Ahn Young-gi, the chairman of the EggBoard, says: "There are also various kinds of functionalities such as eggs helping to lose weight, eggs boosting immunity and eggs improving intelligence. And Salmonella, a common food poisoning bacteria in eggs from developed countries such as the US and EU, has never been detected in Korea. With the introduction of a cold chain system throughout the entire transportation process, that it is hygienically superior is the advantage of Korean eggs."

Professor of Food Engineering at Korea University (Korea Food Communication Forum), Park, Tae-kyun says: "Korea restored the status of a clean country of highly pathogenic AI (H5N6, H5N8 type) from the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) on October 13. By next year, people in Hong Kong can enjoy more Korean eggs on the dining tables again."

In Korea, a highly pathogenic AI last occurred on June 19 and there are no further occurrences so far. South Korea has become a country free of AI again. The status of a clean country of AI can be obtained when no additional highly pathogenic AI occurs for 3 months after the final disposal of birds such as chickens that are infected with AI.
