San Roberto International School Students Address the President and Members of the UN General Assembly

2017-07-25 23:00

MONTERREY, Mexico, July 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Students from San Roberto International School, a Nord Anglia Education school, attended a special side event at the High-Level Political Forum in New York City as part of their commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The event was co-sponsored by the governments of Bulgaria, Malaysia and Argentina, along with UNICEF, Project Everyone, and Nord Anglia Education.

Presenting their results from Nord Anglia's Global Challenge this year, San Roberto International School students committed to raising awareness and taking action on two different goals each year. Using the World's Largest Lesson, an SDG-focused teaching and learning initiative co-led by UNICEF, students over the last nine months have raised awareness of the goals and taken action towards Goals 2 and 3, which aim to end hunger and improve health and well-being respectively.

At a special side event of the High-Level Political Forum, students addressed senior representatives from, governments, the UN and UNICEF including the President of the UN General Assembly, H.E. Peter Thomson, and UNICEF Executive Director, Anthony Lake.

To accomplish these goals, students Alejandro Guajardo Ayala (Grade 8), Marcelo Gonzalez (Grade 8) Ana Sofia Arguelles (Grade 8) and Marcelo Salazar (Grade 7) from San Roberto International School campuses located in San Augustin and Valle Alto, developed action plans and selected the town of nearby La Gloria to direct their efforts. Valle Alto ISR student government and secretariat, families, teachers, and students from both campuses collected donations to provide the community of La Gloria food for 300 children and 200 mothers, scholarships for 18 students, family support and counselling, education on preparing healthy meals, and the construction of 30 temporary homes.

Several tactics were implemented to accomplish these goals, including fundraising events, candy sales, food drives and donations. A particularly successful event was the Model United Nations. More than 30 schools from the area participated and event fees supported the school scholarship fund. The students also hosted a special Children's Day in La Gloria which featured games and prizes along with the distribution of food and educational supplies.

Guajardo Ayala, a participating student said, "The moment you come up with a sustainable idea, the research you do to support it, the time when you actually develop it to the point where you show everyone what you have to offer, all combined, create a spark inside us saying that we managed to help in some sustainable way to this world."

Hortensia Prieto, Principal at San Roberto International School, said:

"The trip to the UN gives our students the opportunity to get knowledge and skills to understand and act creatively and innovatively on issues of global significance. Also they will have the opportunity to meet and interact with students from NAE schools around the world."
