The World's 50 Best Restaurants Announced in Melbourne, Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia, April 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Eleven Madison Park in New York has secured the No.1 spot in the 2017 list of The World's 50 Best Restaurants. In taking the No.1 position, Eleven Madison Park earns the dual titles of The World's Best Restaurant and The Best Restaurant in North America.

This year's winners were revealed at an awards ceremony in Melbourne. The 2017 list welcomes six brand new entries. France, Spain and the USA each count six restaurants on the list.

Among the seven restaurants in Asia on the list, Japan and Thailand each claim two entries. At No.7, Gaggan in Bangkok wins The Best Restaurant in Asia title. Restaurant André, Singapore, climbs 18 places to No.14 while Den in Tokyo debuts at No.45. 

Last year's No.1, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, is at No.2 and retains its title as The Best Restaurant in Europe.

France has six entries on the list, three in the top 20. Alleno Paris Pavillon Ledoyen, the restaurant headed by Yannick Alleno, debuts at No.31, earning the Highest New Entry Award, sponsored by Aspire Lifestyles. Another Paris-based restaurant, Septime (No.35), claims the Sustainable Restaurant Award, sponsored by Silestone.

Spain also boasts six restaurants, three of them in the top 10. Former No.1, El Celler de Can Roca, lands at No.3 and is also the recipient of the The Ferrari Trento Art of Hospitality Award.

Dan Barber's progressive restaurant, Blue Hill at Stone Barns, rises 37 places to No.11 to earn the Highest Climber Award, sponsored by Lavazza.

New York-based pastry entrepreneur Dominique Ansel claims the 2017 title of The World's Best Pastry Chef

Host country Australia is represented by Attica in Melbourne (No.32), retaining its title as The Best Restaurant in Australasia, and Brae (No.44), a first-time entry on the list.

Chef Virgilio Martinez boasts two award wins. His restaurant, Central (No.5), in Peru, is named The Best Restaurant in South America and he is this year's recipient of the Chefs' Choice Award, sponsored by Estrella Damm.

Respected chef Heston Blumenthal is the 2017 recipient of the prestigious Diners Club® Lifetime Achievement Award, while his London restaurant, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, rises nine places to No.36.

Ana Ros of Hisa Franko, Slovenia, is named The World's Best Female Chef 2017.
