Clean recycling has been one of the five-pronged approaches that the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department has recently been promoting for the sustainable management of resources[1].  If recyclables are contaminated or mixed with other substance, they will require additional labour to sort and clean them and thus increasing operational costs and decreasing collectable value of recyclables. The recyclables will likely turn out to be wastes in the landfill.

"With small steps, we can help increase recyclables and reduce waste - and help conserve precious resources. This is why we introduce the Vitasoy Resource Conservation - Clean Beverage PET Bottle Recycling Programme," said Ms. Dorcas Lau, Hong Kong Chief Executive Officer of Vitasoy International Holdings Limited.

"Vitasoy is committed to the sustainability of the environment and community. We are glad to have the opportunity to partner with Hong Chi Super Service Team and launch this initiative to enhance the students' awareness of clean recycling and knowledge on environmental protection, thus contributing to the sustainability of society," continued Ms Dorcas Lau. The Programme promotes four simple steps in clean beverage PET bottle recycling and encourages students to help reduce waste and minimise the environmental footprint.

The Programme will last for a school year until June 2018. During the period, Hong Chi Super Service Team will collect clean beverage PET bottles in designated recycling bins from the participating schools and send them to a nearby government community green station. The bottles will then be delivered to government-recognised downstream recyclers for further proper handling.

Mr. Yim Yat-keung, Services Supervisor of Hong Chi Association, said, "Hong Chi Association is dedicated to quality services in educating, training and empowering people with intellectual disabilities and to improve services on a continuous basis. The Vitasoy Resource Conservation - Clean Beverage PET Bottle Recycling Programme helps provide training for adults with intellectual disabilities. We look forward to having more schools to participate in the Programme."

The inaugural Vitasoy Resource Conservation - Clean Beverage PET Bottle Recycling Programme will also include seminars on environmental protection to more than 4,000 students in the six participating schools, and appointment of about 240 Save Resources Ambassadors. The student ambassadors will join workshops during field trips to the "Yuen Long Community Green Station" which is a community green hub operated by a non-profit making organisation, and attend art course conducted by a multimedia artist. To inspire the creativity of the children and putting their learning into practice, student ambassadors will create art pieces with recycled beverage PET bottles at the end of the Programme.
