BEIJING and SHANGHAI, May 16, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- For the third year running, Allen & Overy awarded scholarship grants to law students at Peking University, Tsinghua University, The University of International Economics and Trade and China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing, as well as Fudan University and East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai through its Scholarship Grant Programme.

This pro bono scholarship programme was designed to encourage Chinese law students to apply their legal knowledge, to think beyond the boundaries of commercial legal practice and to start thinking about the broader social and public interest by conducting research and field projects that benefit the community in areas such as corporate responsibility, legal aid and legislative advocacy.

More than 220 law students applied for this year's programme while 124 shared in grants to fund 45 separate projects. Twelve Allen & Overy lawyers and staff were appointed as mentors to provide guidance for the students' project field work undertaken during their summer vacation.

The students conducted research and case studies on subjects such as multinational corporations' social responsibility in China, legal remedies for victims of medical accidents, investigation into prepaid consumer cards, legal remedies available to migrant workers injured at work and issues related to the building of low-carbon communities. Each student was awarded a certificate of achievement for their work, in addition to the grant.

Allen & Overy consultant Thomas E. Jones, one of the main supporters of the programme, said: "It is only with practical, real-life experience that students are able to gain a true understanding of the significance of abstract legal principles and develop a sense of social responsibility. This program seeks not only to assist students in their future career but also to make a contribution to the cause of social justice and the public good in China. "
