AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France, Feb. 11, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- At the 2014 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Sunpartner Technologies, a French company specializing in solar NETs (New Energy Technologies), will strengthen its position as a leader in the market for connected devices.

From February 24 to 27, 2014, Sunpartner will showcase prototypes of several devices (mobile phones, sensors, watches, electronic shelf labels, phone casings and covers) that use solar technology to recharge devices (Wysips® Crystal and Wysips® Cameleon) and transmit data through LiFi (Wysips ® Connect). Representing a radical transformation in electronics, the market in connected devices (everyday objects that gather information and interact with their users and their environment) is enormous, estimated by IDATE at 80 billion devices in 2020. Almost 85% of these devices will connect to the internet directly or through a terminal (a computer, tablet, or smartphone).

The applications for this technology are numerous and varied, for markets such as energy management, assisting the elderly at home, health, and sports, among others.

The key issues for these devices: battery life and wireless connectivity.

The transparent solar component invented by Sunpartner Technologies meets these challenges by generating energy for terminals and other smart, connected sensors whenever they are exposed to natural or artificial light, objects such as bracelets, labels, signage, educational games, or mobile phone casings and covers.

To date, Wysips® Crystal technology has a yield of 2.5 mW/cm2 with 90% transparency. It optimizes all types of mobile and home automation devices and works with all display technologies, such as MEMS, bistable, LCD, OLED, and optical screens. Wysips® Cameleon generates energy from opaque surfaces. Wysips® Crystal and Wysips® Cameleon enable manufacturers to add new features to devices without changing their appearance.

These technologies are also LiFi compatible thanks to Wysips® Connect -- enabling devices to receive and transmit data such as music, movies, and photos over visible light waves (VLC-Visible Light Communication) without tapping into the battery's reserves. Wysips® Connect is compatible with the international LiFi communication standard (IEEE 802.15, also for WiFi). The photovoltaic cells of the Wysips® component act as a receiver for all types of LiFi signals.

Thanks to LiFi communication, lighting systems can offer new innovative, targeted services:

  • Access to location information and navigation services inside buildings. LiFi devices with Wysips® Connect can help users find their way indoors, in museums, shopping centers, airports, and railway stations.
  • Provide internet access through light in hospitals, airplanes, and secured sites without exposing users to electromagnetic waves and without interfering with other equipment using WiFi.
