Bridging the Commercialisation Gap to Help Support Australia's Scientific Future

New forum series aims to educate and empower scientists to translate research discoveries into commercial success

SYDNEY, Aug. 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Sigma-Aldrich, a leading Life Science company whose biochemical and organic chemical products, kits and services are used in scientific research, launched an Australian first in industry-led initiatives, the Science Next Collaborative (SNC). The SNC calls for a fundamental shift in the way Academics collaborate with Industry to drive innovation in Australia.

Last month, the SNC published a position paper that revealed a need to encourage entrepreneurial skills within Australia's scientific community and drive a transition from a risk-averse culture that currently stifles commercial research output.

Now, the SNC has developed a forum series that will take place in Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne, led by some of Australia's most respected scientists, and other academic and industry experts.

Reich Webber-Montenegro, Director - Marketing, Inside Sales & Shared Services, Sigma-Aldrich said, "The SNC is the first initiative of its kind in Australia and has shone a light on the key challenges facing EMCR (early-to mid-career researchers) as they attempt to commercialise their research.

"The forums will provide an opportunity for a broader audience to continue these important discussions. I'd like to encourage as many scientists as possible to attend as we hear from leading academic and industry representatives on ways to bridge the gap along the commercialisation continuum."

Associate Professor Kaylene Simpson, Head of Victorian Centre for Functional Genomics at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, and SNC Think Tank member, is one of the many experts that will present during the forum series.

"We need a fundamental shift in the way academics collaborate with leading industry players. The SNC is working to see this come to fruition, with the forums being a prime example of this type of collaboration in action."

Fellow SNC Think Tank member, Professor John Carver, Director of the Research School of Chemistry at the Australian National University, added, "Our aim is for attendees to take away a new understanding of the resources and career paths available and feel encouraged to take the steps to achieve commercial success."
