China Declares September 3 a Public Holiday, Sparking an Online Craze of One-Liners Replying to "What Shall I Do For My Country" as Thanks for This New Day Off

NEW YORK, September 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On August 28th, a Chinese-language publicity message that said "With my country giving me an extra day off on September 3, what shall I do for my country?" debuted on the large billboard overlooking New York's Times Square, drawing the attention of many Chinese passers-by who stopped and took photos. As the iconic elements of Chinese royalty, red walls and yellow tiles, were used as the backdrop, the message was not something easily missed by people walking through the famous square.

The advertisement was placed by Chinese company Chenyang Waterborne Paint, which was selected as the paint provider for the repair and renovation work taking place at Tian'anmen Square ahead of the grand parade to be held on September 3. The company leased the billboard overlooking the crossroads of the world, as an expression of gratitude for the new public holiday to commemorate the 70th anniversary of China's victory in the War of Resistance. The move set off a craze of internet users create one-liners mimicking the structure of "Given the new holiday, what shall I do for my country?"
