SHANGHAI, Oct. 2, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Fortune Magazine recently selected Ctrip's CEO Jane Sun as one of the top 50 businesswomen leaders in the world in their "Most Powerful Women International" list. This is the 17th year Fortune has been ranking the Most Powerful Women in business list. The selection criteria factors in business scale, operational quality, and workforce size, internal control and external influence of women-run companies.

In 2005 Ms. Sun joined Ctrip as CFO, and has expanded her role to be the company's COO, Co-president and now CEO. "In November, Ms. Sun was appointed CEO at Ctrip, a China-based travel services company with a market cap of more than $27 billion. The company, which is China's biggest online travel site, is growing fast," Fortune stated when citing the reasons for picking Ms. Sun as the winner.

Over the past 12 years, Jane help drove Ctrip's growth into not only China's leading online travel agency but now the number two online travel agency globally. Under her leadership, Ctrip has made a series of domestic and overseas investments, expanded its business into multiple travel related verticals, and set up a one-stop travel service allows its customers to access every corner of the five continents worldwide.

Today Ctrip is the benchmark for China's tourism and service industry whilst striving to promote globalization. Ms. Sun also has been active in many recent political and diplomatic events. This past June, she attended the 12th EU-China Business Summit in Europe along with Premier Li Keqiang. At the Xiamen BRICS Business Forum, Ms. Sun was the only representative from the tourism industry.

Beyond its globalization efforts, Ctrip also garnered Fortune's attention for its role in workplace gender equality and support for female employees. Fortune specially noted that, "The company has several programs to benefit female employees: an 8,000 yuan gift for new mothers, free taxi rides to pregnant workers, and summer camps at its headquarters for staff who have preschool-aged kids."

This is largely thanks to the emphasis Ctrip placed on women's career development. According to statistics, over fifty percent of Ctrip staff are female, a proportion that far outstrips the average internet company in China and an average tech company in Silicon Valley. Research shows that, by providing nursery service and other woman-oriented benefits in the workplace, companies can improve employee engagement, attract talents, significantly reduce employee turnover, and create the condition for women to become leaders.

Ctrip has also been focusing on creating an equal promotion path for outstanding women managers. Apart from CEO Jane Sun, COO Maria Sun and CFO Cindy Wang, Ctrip has another 4 females in senior executive roles. Women take 34 percent of senior posts at Ctrip, higher than the industry average.

The 50 women on this year's Fortune list came from various industries across 17 countries. 14 of them are Chinese, including Ctrip CEO Jane Sun, Gree Chair Dong Mingzhu, Huawei Chair Sun Yafang, and Alibaba CFO Wu Wei to name a few.
