  • Recognized for its commitment to environmental protection by striving for greener ways to do business

HONG KONG, Nov. 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- DHL Express, the world's leading international express services provider, today was honored at the Capital Outstanding Green Excellence Awards 2012 in Hong Kong. The Award recognized DHL's ongoing commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly business practices, which include both green operations and facilities and inspiring its large local workforce to live greener lives.

Mr. Ken Lee, Head of Commercial, Asia Pacific and Managing Director, Hong Kong and Macau, DHL Express, said: "We are proud to have been recognized at this year's Capital Outstanding Green Excellence Awards. This win reflects our commitment to a belief that sustainable business development is built on a foundation of corporate, social and environmental responsibility. At DHL, our long term commitment is to respect and protect the environment; ensuring sustainability is at the heart of everything we do."

DHL has pledged to improve the carbon efficiency of its own operations and those of its transportation subcontractors by 30% compared to 2007 levels by the year 2020. In concrete terms, this means a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions for every letter and parcel DHL delivers, every ton of cargo transported and every square meter of warehouse space used by the year 2020. In one small step towards this goal, DHL welcomed the first hybrid truck to its fleet in Hong Kong last year.

The company is also helping environmentally-savvy customers to choose sustainable logistics services, offering a pioneering carbon offset solution GOGREEN Carbon Neutral Service which has already been selected by a number of major customers. One global bank alone expects to offset approximately 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year with this service.

Another green milestone was reached earlier this year when DHL opened its third international service center in the Interlink building in Tsing Yi. The facility is the first logistics building to obtain both HKBEAM (Hong Kong Building Environments Assessment Method) and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) accreditation in Hong Kong. These green credentials are essential for DHL, whose GoGreen philosophy underpins all of its business operations.

GoGreen is one of DHL's three ongoing Corporate Responsibility pillars -- GoGreen (protecting the environment), GoHelp (delivering help after natural disasters and disaster management) and GoTeach (championing education). Most recently, close to 800 DHL Hong Kong participants took part in annual Global Volunteer Day activities championing these programs, and last year's activities included an "Organic Green Living Outing" aimed at cultivating green living habits among the community.
