BOSTON, June 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Connected devices have become a must have for the majority of everyday consumers. From smart TVs, to game consoles to streaming media devices, consumers have been provided with a variety of devices to choose from to stream and view content from the Internet. Dedicated streaming media devices have become popular amongst consumers as they provide all features and aspects of a smart TV and game console, for a cheaper price.

A new expert evaluation from the Connected Home UX group at Strategy Analytics (www.strategyanalytics.com) benchmarking the Nexus Player (Exhibit 1), found this streaming media device to be user-friendly with an easy-to-navigate user interface (UI). The smaller, simplistic, lightweight design of the remote also made it easier to quickly navigate through content. Consumers particularly liked the familiarity of the available app store, finding the variety of apps/services to search and download adequate for a compelling media experience. Voice search and Google Cast were also considered value-added benefits.

Taryn Tulay, report author and senior analyst commented, "Voice control was seen as a major benefit to the device as it was extremely accurate, quick and easy to use for all content and not just limited to media/entertainment themes. One downside however, is that voice search results are not seamless with all OTT SVOD services subscribed to/logged into on the device. For example, content on Netflix would not be included in this search. Providing a consolidated search would be more useful and convenient in order to ensure consumers do not pay for content when it is unnecessary."

Diane O'Neill, Director, User Experience Innovation Practice, added, "The media device that can overcome its ego and incorporate all apps/services in a comprehensive search will come out on top. Leaving out a popular OTT SVOD service like Netflix in any search function will be detrimental to consumer adoption of a streaming media device."
