Since June, China's domestic prices for eggs have soared. One-third of the country is experiencing an egg retail price exceeding 10 RMB per kilogram. Affected by short-time supply and demand relation changes, after the two upcoming holidays, the egg price will experience a slight drop in China, but breeding costs will remain high and egg prices will generally stay at a high level.
Egg prices are high for a number of reasons.
In the short term, the imbalance between supply and demand in the second half of the year creates higher prices. During the upcoming holidays, especially the Mid-Autumn festival and China's National Day, peoples' consumption increases. Cakes are also in high demand, which drives demand in the consumer market for eggs, whilst there is a shortage in supply in the short term.
Secondly the hot weather experienced in the preceding months caused a decline in egg production. Hot weather was responsible for decreasing egg production in China by as much as 30%.
Thirdly in the south and northeast areas of China there has been a recent flood disaster, which also had great impact on the local breeding industry and further influenced the market's egg supply.
In addition, transportation costs have also risen -- on the one hand directly pushing up egg prices, while on the other hand leading to market communication becoming unsmooth.
In the long run, the most relevant reason for increases in egg prices is this year's increase in feed prices. All kinds of vitamins and nutrient prices have also risen. Those selling eggs for 7 RMB per kilogram can barely break even.
In previous years the price of eggs after the Mid-Autumn festival has dropped in China, but the range this year is expected to be small, with the overall price of eggs staying at a high level.
