SEOUL, South Korea, June 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Jeemyung Kim from TL Plastic Surgery of Korea, a hospital where many Korean and foreign patients visit to enjoy the latest medical facilities and systematic medical system, spoke of the precautions to take in order to avoid facial contour reoperations.

While various plastic surgeries are undertaken following the development of cosmetic medical science, people undergoing facial contour surgeries such as squared-jaw surgery or cheekbone reduction surgery are increasing in plastic surgery hospitals located in Gangnam, Korea. The number of reoperations or cases showing side effects is increasing as well.

Upon examining the specific instances of dissatisfaction, the main causes for dissatisfaction appeared to be the appearance of a double chin. Some of the causes are due to smoothing of the jaw, failure to see desired results, severe asymmetry of the left and right side or negligible change in width, or the jaw appearing too small as a result of excessive reduction.

Dr. Kim explained that, "When seeing both Korean and foreign patients visiting in our hospital for facial contour reoperations, I can see that, in most cases, patients re-visit hospitals not so much due to side effects requiring medical treatment, but because they are dissatisfied with the result or feel no effect of the surgery. Among patients desiring reoperation, 80% are dissatisfied with the result, and 20% are related to side effectsPatients may be concerned with side effects, thus, having mixed feelings of concern and anxiety. It is foremost important to show empathy with the patients, and then to correctly diagnose the cause of the issue and work on improving the problem."

Dr. Kim added that, "Because facial contour surgery is extremely advanced plastic surgery it is not easy to create a smooth jaw line. This requires years of experience."

Dr. Kim continued to advise that, "This is why the method of surgery is important. I am not speaking of a glossy technique or skill. Plastic surgery is a medical practice and not an art form. It is safe to use a method that has been verified and reviewed academically, instead of using one's own technique or skills. Going through a surgery based on principles and verified methods will guarantee a stable result. Moreover, pre-surgery planning is extremely important. Anyone can simply cut bones during chin point surgery or squared-jaw surgery after gaining a little experience. However, one should be able to diagnose the face and suggest an adequate method. It is important to be able to suggest an adequate plan, having a sufficient diagnosis and consultation process. When examining patients that visit our hospital, we see many cases where there is a significant improvement for the front and profile views by slightly trimming the line in a simple way. Some tend to think that facial contour reoperation is a big surgery, however, because a significant change may occur after taking a small measure, I would recommend to consult with an experienced specialist."
