SHANGHAI, China, May 16 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- OSRAM, one of the two largest lamp manufacturers in the world, announced today that it is donating products and materials of total RMB500,000 to the most severely suffering areas. The donation fully embodies OSRAM employees' sympathy for the victims and injured.

The earthquake, reportedly the most powerful to hit China in 30 years, has triggered serious casualties and caused thousands of people to become homeless. The worst is that the casualties keep rising.

To echo the quick and efficient response of the government, OSRAM China is initiating the aid program and immediately delivering products of RMB500,000 to the afflicted areas through China Red Cross. The donation includes 8,800 sets of camping LED lamps, electric torch and Dot-it lamps, 22,400 units of torches and camping batteries and 350 umbrellas. OSRAM also organized internal donations in order to help more sufferers.

Siemens, the parent company of OSRAM, is carrying out its own disaster-relief program "Caring Hands" from the time the earthquake occurred by donating RMB 2 million and 10 SkyHydrant water filters to the earthquake-stricken areas.

"The earthquake in Wenchuan Sichuan has influenced all of us. We felt sorrow for those who have suffered from the earthquake or families who lost members. All OSRAM China staffs are concerning about the progress of rescue," said Mr. Lars Johnsen, President of OSRAM China. "China is a significant domestic market out of Europe for OSRAM, which means we share weal and woe together. In this very moment we have a duty to make contributions."

Since their official entry into China in 1995, OSRAM has deeply rooted itself in China with the continuous increase of local investments and business expansion. Donation is just one step along the way of OSRAM's dedication to become a responsible corporate citizen in China.

In China, OSRAM is implementing a sustainable development strategy. Three pandas Ouou, Sisi and Langlang, adopted by OSRAM China last year symbolize OSRAM's sustainability philosophy. Now that the earthquake has struck the home of pandas, OSRAM China's staff feel concern over the safety of Ouou, Sisi, Langlang and other pandas in Wolong. They are paying close attention to the progress of rescue and status of pandas.
