TAIPEI, Dec. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- UL (Underwriters Laboratories), a global safety science leader, today announced that its laboratory in Taiwan is accredited by the Power Matters Alliance (PMA), making it the sole PMA testing facility in Taiwan. At the same time, MediaTek (TSE: 2454), a global IC industry leader, was awarded the first PMA certification from UL Taiwan, indicating that their product MT3188 IC Module is in compliance of the PMA requirements. PMA is a leader in inductive wireless charging technology with installations in many popular venues, including select Starbucks and McDonald's stores in United States.

Effective from March 2014, manufacturers can submit their PMA base stations or devices for testing to the PMA-TS-0001-0 standard for PMA-CD-0005-0 (conformance testing) and PMA-CD-0011-0 (interoperability testing), resulting in obtaining the PMA Mark.

"The PMA certification is an important part of MediaTek's multimode wireless power solutions for the market. The certification of the MT3188 demonstrates that our technology meets the PMA global standard for smart and energy-efficient transfer of wireless power. With professional support from UL, we were able to achieve this timely certification of the MT3188," said Mark Estabrook, strategic marketing director at MediaTek's wireless connectivity and networking business unit.

The new recognition symbolizes that UL is able to serve as a testing and certification ground for PMA member companies, especially those in Asia, wishing to certify products using the PMA standard. UL Taiwan laboratory is the second UL testing facility which successfully went through a stringent auditing process conducted by the PMA. The first UL PMA-approved laboratory is located in Fremont, Calif., USA.

"Becoming a PMA-approved laboratory, one must demonstrate its strengths in applicable test equipment, deployment of test tools, resources and training support. We are delighted to see the UL Taiwan laboratory meeting our assessment criteria without any findings and eventually becoming our sole accredited testing facility for PMA certification in Taiwan," said Ron Resnick, president, PMA.

"Today, wireless charging technology is becoming popular and significant in our society. A comprehensive certification program will surely guide manufacturers design and produce their products with better performance and user experience," said Barry Yu, regional general manager for the Greater China consumer technology division at UL.

"This newly added testing capability in Taiwan has enabled our engineering team in Greater China to provide a more complete testing solution for consumer technology manufacturers. Our services range from product safety to wireless and interoperability performance, from product design review to training and consultancy," Yu added.
