UNDP Establishes New Strategic Partnership with Letv

BEIJING, May 20, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Letv today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formalise a new strategic partnership. This partnership will see both sides work together in a series of initiatives, initially to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. Subsequent work is also proposed on reducing the urban-rural digital gap and promoting clean energy, as well as other areas of cooperation.

In his speech at the event, UNDP China Deputy Country Director Patrick Haverman noted the significance of the partnership: 'UNDP has been cooperating with China since 1979, and as China has matured, we have evolved to match. Whereas once we were a donor and an implementer to this country, we are now a partner and an advisor. We provide guidance to China's government and to its people, and this Memorandum of Understanding with Letv gives us another important way in which to share this guidance. I look forward to fully exploring the opportunities that this new relationship with Letv will offer as our partnership develops.'

2015 is an important milestone for the UN. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the UN's founding, and a series of celebratory activities will be held worldwide to reflect on the UN's achievements in the fields of peace, human rights and development.

Moreover, this year also sees the expiration of the Millennium Development Goals that have steered global development for the last fifteen years. 2015 will be pivotal in shaping global development, with the Addis Ababa Conference on Development Financing in July, the September adoption of the Post-2015 Agenda in New York and the December Paris Conference on Climate Change (COP21) following on from April's Sendai Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. These four meetings will agree the means and goals of sustainable development worldwide, and the UN is mounting a campaign across the planet to drive public awareness of these events.

It is in this context that this new partnership has been established. Letv will join UNDP in marking the 70th anniversary of the UN, to celebrate 70 years of UN work and raise the profile of the Post-2015 Agenda. Going forward, both sides will pool resources to contribute to China's sustainable development in areas including technological innovation, bridging China's regional digital divide and promoting clean energy. More generally, the partners will work to raise public awareness of the importance of development issues.

Speaking at the event the CEO of Letv Cloud Computing Wu Yazhou affirmed that 'Letv Cloud will utilise its global network and development experience to provide UNDP with technical support in assisting developing countries.'
