ALISO VIEJO, California, Sept. 22, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- MEK Entertainment Inc. a stealth videogame startup helmed by Firefall and World of Warcraft veteran, Mark Kern, announced its existence today as well as the successful completion of $1 million in seed round funding.

The indie game developer has been working in secret on a new gaming universe that will be powered by the modding community, built for the Oculus Rift from the ground up, and integrated with blockchain technology similar to Bitcoin to power its player driven economy.

"I was inspired by the book Ready, Player One, by Earnest Cline, with its universe of multiple MMO experiences. We can't build it alone. I've been looking for a way to let more gamers and modders realize their own virtual worlds and I think we found it," said Kern.

The game features a retro 8-bit and SNES inspired art style powered by MEK Entertainment's new ray-tracing, voxel graphics engine. The game's multiverse will contain vast procedural landscapes and user scriptable servers. Kern remarked, "We're building a destination--A modder's paradise," and that "the game is a love theme to retro gaming, getting back to the roots of entertainment and fun. We're taking inspiration from fun sandbox experiences like Minecraft, Terraria and Starbound, but we're also looking to the games we loved growing up with in the 80's and 90's."

Kern is joined by several other game industry professionals, including former key developers from Oculus Rift, ID Software, Red 5 Studios, Activision-Blizzard and Chucklefish, as well as experts from the emerging crypto-currency industry.

Nothing more is being revealed by the secretive studio at this point, but the company webpage, www.mek-entertainment.com, hosts a video introduction and is taking e-mail registrations from interested gamers. The studio has promised that the first 100 people who register will receive a free copy of the game, with additional perks promised for those gamers who join early and track the progress of the company and its VR debut title.
