CARLSBAD, Calif., Oct. 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Adding network capacity and increasing the performance of its fast Yonder® internet service for general aviation customers, ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT) is bringing Exede® In The Air to business executives, fractional owners, charter and jet card flyers, and others who rely on general aviation jets. The service offers even better performance than the ViaSat Yonder service, already the fastest service over both land and water, and an experience similar to the high-speed in-flight internet available on JetBlue and United Airlines.

The higher capacity and improved economics of the ViaSat Ka-band satellite network ensure business aircraft passengers stay productive and entertained en route with the same applications and services they use on the ground. Flight tests have recently validated multiple devices simultaneously using high-bandwidth applications such as multi-site videoconferencing, social media, and live streaming of HD TV and movies while switching between Ku and Ka satellites.

"This is another step in the transition to the next generation of in-flight performance that customers are looking for. People who use Exede in-flight service love it. In fact, JetBlue celebrated one million connected devices in September, and that's in only 10 months since the launch of service and just now reaching 70 aircraft with the service installed," said Leo Conboy, business area director for ViaSat general aviation. "With more than 500 aircraft on our near-global footprint for Ku-band Yonder service, we'll continue to meet the needs of ultra-long range business jets while adding Exede Ka-band services for high-density flight routes over North America, Europe, the Mediterranean, and northern Africa."

Exede services for general aviation are based on the same ViaSat satellite broadband technology as Exede Internet, now serving over 640,000 households in the U.S.; Exede In The Air high-speed in-flight internet for commercial air passengers; Exede Business tailored to business subscribers with added speed and data; and Exede Enterprise for live events, field operations, and disaster response.

In June, a report from the FCC showed that Exede Internet led 14 other internet services in delivering against advertised speeds for the second consecutive year and in September, Exede In The Air won the Avion Award for Best Achievement in Technology at the Airline Passenger Experience Expo (APEX).
