Acer Display Obtains TUV Rheinland Greater China's First Low Blue Light Certificate

HONG KONG, Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Health has become all the rage in the display market recently, with low blue light and flicker-free as the new mainstream attributes. Leading brands have rushed to launch related products. Acer, a premium brand, recently obtained the first Low Blue Light certificate issued by TUV Rheinland Greater China. This safety certificate offers consumers a safer and more reliable choice.

Extended exposure to blue light is believed to harm the eyes and cause macular degeneration. Low blue light products have now reached the market, intended for users such as gamers, who must view displays for long periods. As many people spend long periods in front of monitors, TUV Rheinland has developed a display-specific Low Blue Light testing standard (2PfG) that measures a display's blue light intensity, wavelength, and on-screen flickering during brightness changes. This can help manufacturers develop products that are better for consumers' health. "Low blue light designs reduce eye fatigue, but may also make the colors less vivid -- TUV Rheinland's quality testing aims to balance the two," says Jerry Lin, Display Service project manager.

Light hazard ratings are often based on "light color". For the same amount of energy, the red to infra-red spectrum is less harmful to the skin and eyes compared to the blue and ultra-violet spectrum. Regardless of whether physical harm is caused to the skin or eyes, "light color" still affects the biological clock on a psychological level. The reddish light at sunset makes people sense that daytime is nearly over, and it is almost time to rest. Sleep hormones are then automatically secreted by the body. Bluish light makes people feel that it is daytime, so their metabolism becomes more active and they stay awake longer.

Displays must be tested using internationally recognized measurement procedures to qualify for the TUV Rheinland Low Blue Light Content mark. A device that passes the test has exhibited "Low Blue Light Content" properties under a special or default mode. Acer's new generation of low blue light LCD displays take into account the need to protect customers' eyes. The low blue light setting is configured at the factory so consumers don't end up sacrificing image quality through their own adjustments. Acer's Low Blue Light certification has its own unique ID and QR Code. Acer customers worldwide can all scan the QR Code to view the Low Blue Light certification information.
