LONDON, April 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Strong growth in the developing economies of China, India, Southeast Asia and Eastern Europe is expected to accelerate the demand for steel products. As employment opportunities for skilled technicians and maintenance workers rise and worker compensation costs go up, steel producers' focus on safety will spur the adoption of personal protective equipment (PPE). Consolidation of the steel industry will also fuel the uptake of premium quality PPE as global steel producers look to streamline operations and standardize safety procedures across their facilities.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Personal Protective Equipment in the Global Steel Industry—Outlook and Trends (https://www.frost.com/nf4a), finds that the use of premium reusable respirators and powered air purifying respirators (PAPRs), auto-darkening welding helmets, safety harnesses, portable multi-gas detectors, and heat- and flame-resistant protective gloves and clothing will gather momentum in the next few years.

"Companies are acknowledging the long-term benefits of protecting employees with high-quality PPE," said Frost & Sullivan Chemicals, Materials and Food Research Analyst Shray Sharma. "In addition to increased comfort, higher worker productivity and regulatory compliance, PPE reduces workplace-related injuries that can otherwise be damaging in terms of liability costs, insurance premiums, lost productivity and negative publicity."

Each occupation in the steel industry has a unique set of requirements, and most PPE manufacturers position their products with a focus on a specific functionality. For instance, protective gloves and clothing are tailored to the type of protection needed, such as chemical-, heat- and flame-, and cut-resistant.

"Manufacturers are expected to continue investing in the research and development of multifunctional products," noted Sharma. "Material technology innovations that further improve end-user comfort too will help PPE manufacturers reinforce their position in the global steel industry."
