Expert to introduce five rare butterfly species on Lantau; free guided tours to locate butterflies

Although commonly referred to as a concrete jungle, Hong Kong features much precious flora and fauna, especially on Lantau Island, which is not far from the city centre. In this connection, Ngong Ping 360 invited an expert on butterflies, Mr Nelson So, to introduce everyone to five rare butterfly species that can be found on Lantau: the Tamil Grass Dart (Taractrocera ceramas), Striped Bush Hopper (Ampittia virgata), Large Three-ring (Ypthima motschulskyi), Common Birdwing (Triodes helena) and Golden Birdwing (Triodes aeacus), with the first three species also known as the 'three treasures of Ngong Ping'. Upon arriving at Ngong Ping 360, guests will be able to join a free guided tour at the Ngong Ping Nature Centre, on which they will be able to explore the ecology and cultural landscapes of Lantau and look for butterflies on their way.

Besides the five species, other butterfly species which can be found on Lantau include the Malayan (Megisba malaya), Chestnut Tiger (Parantica sita), Constable (Dichorragia nesimachus), Common Tiger (Danaus genutia) and Red Lacewing (Cethosia biblis). Among these, the Common Tiger butterfly, with the colour and pattern on its wing resembling those of a tiger, is the most commonly spotted. When riding the cable car to Ngong Ping 360 and visiting Ngong Ping Village, guests can take a closer look and may discover precious butterflies hovering around them."

McDull and McMug to transform into butterfly fairies; information panels detail Lantau ecology

While real butterflies will have to be observed from something of a distance, McDull, McMug and their classmates from Chun Tin Fa Fa Kindergarten, who will dress up as butterflies, will engage guests up close. As it turns out, McMug is a native of Lantau Island. On a thundery night, he was separated from the rest of the pigs at the piggery, and was discovered by Mum and Dad, who were visiting Lantau. They took the one-month-old piglet home to the city and kept him as a pet. McMug grew up as a city pig, but he has always longed to visit his birthplace. This summer, McMug will be joining his cousin McDull together with his classmates back on Lantau to retrace his family roots. During the 'McDull & McMug Summer Fest 360', a stage will be set up at Ngong Ping Village, on which McDull, McMug, Goosie and May will dress up as colourful butterfly fairies and Fai as a cute little bee to pose with guests for photographs surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. The Holidays 360 will provide an information panel to help guests familiarise themselves with the butterflies of Lantau.

Tour "Mini Tai O" with McDull and McMug and taste Tai O delicacies

Besides the lush greenery and rare species, Lantau Island has also retained the unique culture of fishing villages, the best known of which is Tai O. During the 'McDull & McMug Summer Fest 360', a "Mini Tai O" will appear at Ngong Ping Village. Guests will be able to witness McDull enjoy the cool air in one of the stilt houses found only in Tai O, and McMug take a sampan out to sea to say hello to two Chinese White Dolphins leaping above the water. Ngong Ping 360 has also prepared a range of Tai O delicacies during the Summer Fest, including glutinous rice dumplings (cha gwo and gai si tang varieties), mountain begonia, and fish balls in prawn paste and curry. Guests will be able to taste these delicacies at concessionary prices at Ngong Ping Village.
