Bureau Veritas Announces Services to Evaluate Hoverboard Safety and Performance

HONG KONG, March 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services, the world's leader in testing, inspection and certification services, announces a suite of services to confirm compliance to UL 2272 and ensure the general safety and performance of self-balancing scooters, also known as hoverboards.

In light of reports of 50+ self-balancing scooter fires and many injuries, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is urging companies importing, producing, or selling self-balancing scooters / hoverboards in the U.S, to comply with voluntary safety standards. Per the CPSC, hoverboard imports not compliant with UL 2272 may be subject to detention and seizure and that the agency may seek recalls of any noncompliant products sold domestically. It does not require them to be UL-listed or certified as compliant.

Bureau Veritas has developed a two phase, cost-effective approach to evaluate and test hoverboards to determine compliance to the UL 2272 Standard.

  • The first phase is a Design Review to evaluate the product construction, its components and documentation to determine if the product can comply with the standard.
  • Second phase is Full Testing to UL 2272, also known as "Outline of Investigation for Electrical Systems for Self-Balancing Scooters." The new standard covers the electric drive train including the rechargeable battery and charger system combination for use in self-balancing scooters.

Bureau Veritas has also developed ASTM type testing that supplements the UL 2272 standards to address mechanical and physical properties, fall hazards, and any other gaps identified in the requirements that may present potential safety risks. ASTM International is working towards developing standards for hoverboards. As a key member of that ASTM hoverboard subcommittee, Bureau Veritas is in the unique position of possessing the knowledge and experience to identify hoverboard safety and quality issues. Bureau Veritas also offers testing to verify FCC and Bluetooth compliance.

Bureau Veritas understands your urgent need to determine if product is compliant. Our test results will provide manufacturers and retailers with the information they need to determine if their products on shelves or in warehouses are safe and in compliance with UL 2272.  Contact us today for more information on pricing, turnaround time and materials needed to submit a product.
