Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) comprise the majority of enterprises worldwide. They are an essential contributor of innovation, economic and social progress, as well as job creation. However, at the same time, SMEs face many challenges, common ones which include: access to finance, complicated regulatory business environments, a shortage of skilled labor for the digital economy, and access to markets abroad / integration into global value chains. These concerns have been increasingly acknowledged by many governments, however, further progress is essential for inclusive economic growth. Specific obstacles SMEs face that the B20 SME Cross-Thematic group will focus on are: How can SMEs be further empowered? How can a better participation of SMEs in global value chains be facilitated?
