NS BlueScope Malaysia and its project partner Swissma Building Technologies Sdn Bhd have worked hand in hand to provide quality roofing to the Orang Asli Community Training Centre and five satellite buildings in Chenderiang, Perak. NS BlueScope Malaysia as an organisation is dedicated to foster community engagement and realize its corporate social responsibility (CSR) through the CONNACTION program, which is derived from the words "Continuous" and "Action" as a cornerstone of its activities in the country, this roofing project is part of the commitment.

When speaking about the project in detail, Mr. Pongsak Padungkarn, Country President for Malaysia, Singapore & Brunei stated, "NS BlueScope has provided roofing for the Orang Asli Community Training Centre as it will benefit the entire community living here, currently there are over 150 Orang Asli being trained in Chenderiang in sustainable agriculture practices that address livelihood needs of Orang Asli communities without compromising environment needs and the techniques of sustainable agriculture. This includes over 60 Orang Asli children who receive regular community-based training together with a customised supplementary education programme that includes sports activities."

"Our contribution cannot be measured in monetary terms, alone NS BlueScope Malaysia has invested an estimated RM150,000 into this project. Through our 'CONNACTION' program our aim is to have a direct impact on the living conditions of as many families across the country as possible.

"While not directly housing, this project is in-line with the government's decision announced in the recent budget to build and refurbish 17,000 units of destitute and dilapidated houses in remote Orang Asli villages.

"For this project we also engaged with Malaysian Care, a local NGO, to evaluate the impact of a dedicated Orang Asli Community Training Centre and found that this project would benefit the whole community, both from having improved infrastructure and from the added benefits of training which will build up individual skills and competencies. Central facilities like this are important components of long term community sustainability.

"It is our wish to see the broader Orang Asli community in Chenderiang have the opportunity to learn the skills that will allow them to further contribute to the country's development, this facility is an important step in that direction," Concluded Mr. Pongsak Padungkarn

Mr. Low Ping Hing, the Managing Director of partner Swissma Building Technologies Sdn Bhd, stated that, "We are proud to be a part of this project and pleased to be able to give back to the Orang Asli community in a way that is both meaningful and sustainable. As a leading company in the construction industry the best way to showcase our vision for the future is to assist communities in need by building the structures that they require to function effectively."
