TCL Communication and ASTRI Showcase Commercial TD-LTE Application of Software Defined Ratio User Equipment at Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona

2017-02-27 19:31 4445

HONG KONG, Feb. 27, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- TCL Communication (TCL) -- a global leader in mobile devices and telecommunications technology -- and Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) are showcasing the interoperation of Software Defined Ratio (SDR) User Equipment (UE) and commercial TD-LTE small cell base stations at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 in Barcelona, Spain.

As 5G telecommunication technology develops globally, SDR is playing an increasingly important role in the popular trend to drive software-driven telecommunication systems. This offers the flexibility of upgrading applications and systems, without the compulsion of replacing hardware components every time there is a software upgrade. Through simple upgrades, SDR base stations and terminals can address varying degrees of requirements on latency, reliability, and throughput.

The demonstration shows how the Open Air Interface (OAI) UE can receive live downlink video stream from Sunnada's commercial TD-LTE small cell. OAI is a leading open-source software that emulates LTE systems on general purpose processor platforms. Joint efforts from TCL and ASTRI have recently led to the possibility of interoperation between OAI UE and commercial TD-LTE base stations. Through the collective expertise and capability of their R&D experts, TCL, ASTRI, and the OAI community are developing advanced 4.5/5G features on OAI including support for massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) and millimetre-wave frequencies. Apart from proof-of-concept system development, ASTRI and TCL also collaborate closely to contribute to international standardisation organisations in the areas of 5G New Radio and Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications.

Since 2015, TCL has been one of the early investors in the global R&D for 5G base stations. It endeavours to expand the pace of telecommunications development, seeking to commercialise Device-to-device (D2D) solutions and other 5G applications that will benefit the entire industry. In partnership with ASTRI, TCL Communication is driving a number of collaborative projects on open source communication systems to implement and test 5G-enabling technologies. The successful interoperability demonstration of OAI UE and commercial TD-LTE base station represents a big, meaningful leap for TCL in this journey.

ASTRI has been active in LTE R&D since 2008, playing a leading role in market-ready LTE and LTE-Advanced small cell and terminal technologies. As a pioneer in 5G technologies, the institute is devoted to developing next generation communication systems. Apart from C-RAN systems, ASTRI is also involved in developing and commercialising different 4.5/5G technologies including Massive MIMO, Machine Type Communications (MTC), D2D and V2X.

The demonstration took place at the Sunnada booth (Hall 5, Stand 5G70) in MWC 2017 being held at Fira Gran Via, Barcelona, Spain from 27 February to 2 March 2017.
