The New Definition of "Made-in-China" Reaches European Shores with Roll-Out of 7-Layer Diaper in Germany

BERLIN, May 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- A video taken recently of a survey of young parents on the streets of Berlin has drawn broad attention and stimulated discussions across the community of new mothers. The advanced technology and performance of Chinese-made diapers discussed in the video have gone viral on Twitter and made a big impact on the parenting community. Many young parents concurred when one said that "in recent years, we have become fans of Chinese products, whether it be Huawei cellphones, Midea rice cookers or Mayinglong herbal medicines. Now China-made diapers have made the grade and are, once again, changing our perception of Chinese products. It is truly incredible."

The interviewer invited passers-by to take part in a demonstration. More than a dozen young parents were randomly selected to be active participants in a diaper performance test. The all-white diaper immediately attracted their attention. After handling the diaper to see how it felt against their skin, pouring water on it to see the reaction, smelling it and then cutting it with a scissors, followed by every attempt to damage or destroy the diaper, the young moms and dads came to the conclusion that the product performed very well in terms of safety, softness, absorption ability and air permeability. When they were told that the diaper was made in China, they did not hide their surprise: "we never thought that Chinese made diapers were such good quality and, not only that, these diapers are of much better quality than those we are using right now."

The white diaper in the video, sold under the brand name Baken, is made by China-based Hunan Cosom Care Products, a Chinese diaper manufacturer known for its strength in technology research and development. According to Baken employees who were present at the demonstration, the reason why the diaper in the video is made only in white is to eliminate the presence of harmful materials such as formaldehyde which is a component of the ink used to make the printed patterns that appear on most diapers, as these materials can endanger the baby's heath. The good absorption, dryness, permeability and softness are due to the 7-layer core technology that is proprietary to Baken. "We always use diapers with printed patterns, but we didn't know that these lovely patterns could harm our baby. We've learned a lot." Celebrated German child rearing blogger Shiloah Baker spoke highly of the Baken diaper after watching the video: "Only pure white paper diaper is safest. Chinese Baken paper diaper is amazing. I'll go to SANOPHARM to buy one."

Celebrated British baby care professional and blogger Claire Verity wrote on her Twitter page after seeing the street demonstration video: "Baken paper diaper is still so comfortable after absorbing much water, Chinese or German friends help buy one for me."

In recent years, Chinese products have been gradually gaining in popularity among European consumers. Since the roll of the Made-in-China 2025 initiative, the government program to comprehensively upgrade the manufacturing sector by encouraging innovation, many fabs and factories with a strong suit in technology have been set up by entrepreneurs with an innovative bent, paving the way for the significant amount of progress that has already taken place and will continue to take place across the sector. Baken's proprietary 7-layer diaper launched a trend across the industry in China last year. In a segment of the popular Chinese-language TV show Consumer Advocate that airs on CCTV, the country's predominant nationwide television network, the Baken diaper exceeded many international brands in the performance test.

The innovative trend traversing the diaper industry has now made its way to Germany. With each release of a new made-in-China product, consumers are continually being made aware of the transformation taking place across China's manufacturing sector. Claudia Vernotti, co-founder and director of China-EU, an association whose mission is focused on leveraging opportunities created by the integration of China's and the EU's digital sectors, said at a recent e-business seminar: "the West can no longer afford to hold on to the same old prejudices when considering China's level of innovation and development. The West, and especially Europe, should change the outdated and superficial way of looking at innovation in China."

European countries have, for a long time, been used to influencing and dominating the Chinese market with its own perspective on innovation while the high expectations on behalf of European consumers in terms of quality coupled by stringent EU standards kept Chinese products out of most European homes. The innovative core technology and the superior performance of the Baken diaper is yet another example of the progress being made by Chinese producers and their products in terms of technology, however, what has been an even bigger factor in China's ability to gain a rightful share in global markets is the Chinese entrepreneur's perspective when it comes to innovation and the bold challenge he or she is presenting to the existing market structure. Coming into the market with an all-white diaper has given European mothers an opportunity to completely rethink what they want from a quality diaper, and to move away from the perception that a good diaper must have a printed pattern, generating a reset in the minds of the mothers in terms of the definition of quality and where Chinese products fit within that definition. The technology, which has succeeded in delivering the excellent absorption, dryness and softness of the diaper, is a disruptor and a challenge to the entire diaper industry. The arrival of the Baken diaper in Germany and its ability to demonstrate superior performance when compared to its American and European peers is a reflection of the rise of innovation within Chinese firms and a testament to the uninterrupted progress of technology. The new generation of Chinese entrepreneurs that are making a splash worldwide with their bold moves when coupled with the new industrial revolution that is taking place in China are making waves not only in their home country, but around the world.

Today we are witnessing how the Baken diaper has surprised mothers and diaper makers in European countries. "Made-in-China" products are no longer followers, and, with each passing day, they are becoming the innovative pioneers that are influencing the world. The government's Made-in-China 2025 initiative has given Europe reason to "look to the East." When it comes to being on the fast track of development these days, Europe may wish to catch up with the "Chinese pace."
