"Now ASEAN is considered as the highest rate growth region in the world. However, we are facing one critical issue of how digitization has changed the way we communicate. Challenge is, we have to question ourselves, 'are we driving a change of we are driven by it?' This event will encourage us to drive a change because the most valuable virtue of technology is us, humanity. We humanize the digital world," said Rudiantara.

Along with the opening event series, ASEAN PR Network (APRN) and Global Alliance PR and Communication also honored Top 3 Best Abstracts showcasing in-depth researches on the 50 years achievement of ASEAN, particularly in communication. Key topics include corporate communication, international relations, media relations, public relations, public perception, and social media communication strategies within political, economic, and socio-cultural issues.

"From gender to ASEAN progress on social media, we encourage exceptional talents and young minds to promote all positive aspects ASEAN has developed within 50 years. We will also share the proceeding paper, as a summary of all best researches, to governance officials as well as PR associations in Australia, Brazil, and United Kingdom. By doing so, we believe that this leads to the more effective communication plans to globally compete," said Yuliana Riana P, MM, Head of Centre for ASEAN Public Relations Studies (Indonesia).

A total of 25 best papers from PR professionals and academics from Indonesia, Myanmar, Australia, and New Zealand was presented and the top 3 was announced afterwards. All winners and the other 3 chosen papers will be published in The Journal of Communication Management by Emerald Group Publishing, which also listed by Scopus, a bibliography database of academic abstracts and articles with more than 22,000 titles from up to 5,000 publishers worldwide. Top Best Abstracts include:

  • Dr. Philippa Mules, School of Communication Studies - New Zealand
Topic: How is Activism Represented in Public Relations Textbooks? (Content Analysis of the Inclusion and Representation of Activism in Public Relations Textbooks).
  • Dr. Gregoria Arum Yudarwati & Ignatius Agus Putranto, Universitas Atmajaya -- Yogyakarta
Topic: Participating Development Communication: Between Achieving Government's Development Target & Encouraging Community's Participation (A Case Study in Renewable Energy Initiatives in Indonesia).

The opening night also covered networking with high-level PR executives while enjoying drinks and canapes during sunset. "Networking with a lot of people across countries will give you many chances to dig more valuable knowledge, particularly in PR industry. Like most people often say, 'how can you love if you don't know;' small talk will lead to bigger plan and collaboration between countries in the future," said Prita Kemal Gani, Founder of APRN. The ASEAN PR Conference 2017 is a 3-day conference preceded by pre-conference programs such as Submission of Papers/Abstract, Association workshops and welcome reception.
