WeChat Tightens Crackdown Against Counterfeit with Major Improvements

GUANGZHOU, China, March 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Sellers of counterfeit goods through WeChat are at greater risk than ever before. WeChat took measures against more than 72,000 infringer accounts in 2017 for selling counterfeit goods, according to WeChat's Annual Report on the Protection of Brand Owners, which released on the same day.

On Tuesday, WeChat brand protection team announced upgrade of Brand Protection Platform established in 2016, including 4 major functions and 38 module. One of the key upgrade is: invitation-only mechanism was replaced by open application to all brand owners. The application process of Brand Protection Platform has been streamlined to provide higher efficiency. Also, WeChat respect the legitimate rights and interests of all brand owners, non-members can equally protect their brands by lodging complaints via the easy -to-use and efficient Infringement Complaint E-platform.

Last week, WeChat announced that the total monthly active users of WeChat worldwide exceeded 1 billion as of the Spring Festival in 2018. In the field of brand protection, Brent Irvin, Vice President and General Counsel of Tencent, points out that WeChat takes the issue of infringement very seriously and is committed to improving its efficiency at processing complaints, and providing brand owners with comprehensive and multi-dimensional brand protection measures.

WeChat brand protection team received more than 126,013 valid infringement clues through user complaints in the past year, and the accuracy of crackdown actions exceeds 99.9%.

The strengthened crackdown against brand infringements sets higher threshold and costs for sellers of counterfeit goods. As of early February, 2018, 976 mini programs have been permanently banned by WeChat, and more than 22,300 infringing links and pieces of content have been removed on Infringement Complaint E-platform.

More than 180 domestic and foreign companies from 18 countries and regions covering over 400 well-known trademarks from China and abroad have registered on WeChat's Brand Protection Platform. Most of the registered companies are from the United States, China, Switzerland, Japan and France.
