BEIJING, SAN JOSE, Calif., and TAMPERE, Finland, Nov. 2, 2010 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- Symbio, a leading software foundry and provider of outsourced product development solutions worldwide, and IBM China Development Lab, on November 2, announced the winners of the 2010 Cognos China Developer Competition.

Grand prize winner Mr. Hong Zhou Zheng developed a product profitability analysis tool for the 2010 Cognos China Developer Competition

The competition, held between June 1 - September 15, 2010, invited developers, students and other professionals located across Greater China to create applications that incorporated various components of IBM Cognos 8 Business Intelligence (BI) Developer Edition, the product that delivers a complete range of BI capabilities (reporting, analysis, dashboards and scorecards) on a single, service-oriented architecture (SOA).  Participants accessed IBM developerWorks, a web-based professional network and technical resource, to download the product, and submitted applications were rated on levels of originality, quality, user experience, as well as relevance to IBM and Symbio's clients.

Grand prize winner Hong Zhou Zheng created an application that showcased how the reporting and analytical capabilities of Cognos 8 can help consumer electronic companies in China manage their inventories, evaluate profit-and-loss statements across different business units, and leverage the data for critical business decisions.

"Companies in Greater China across all industries increasingly need to adopt business analytics into their operations," said Frank Ouyang, Senior Manager, Cognos Software Development, Business Analytics, IBM China Development Lab.  "As a result, it is important to educate and train the local community on IBM's BI capabilities, helping them improve decision making and competitive advantage.  Symbio has been a fantastic business partner in facilitating this initiative, and I'm pleased with the applications developed by our competition's participants."

Many of the competition's participants were members of the Cognos China User Group, (http://www.cognosusersgroup.com), a network sponsored by Symbio that encourages the sharing of experiences, insights and knowledge about IBM Cognos software amongst members located in Greater China.  The user group boasts over 10,000 registered members, making it one of the largest Cognos-related communities in the world.

"The winners of the 2010 Cognos Developer Competition exemplified deep expertise in BI capabilities, and the developed solutions will help increase our clients' operational efficiencies," said Jacob Hsu, CEO of Symbio. "We will continue to foster the local community, helping companies utilize business analytics to create a smarter and interconnected world."
