David Hartung's Stunning Images Capture the Essence of an Evolving Macau

  • Macau: Work in Progress is a visual narrative that chronicles the reinvention of Macau

MACAU, Dec. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- On 6 December 2011, David Hartung and the Ignite Media Group will publish a 300-page art book of photographs chronicling five years of unprecedented growth and change in Macau. Featuring page after page of unforgettable images and a preface by Jose Luis de Sales Marques, mayor of the city in the 1990s, Macau: Work in Progress is a beautiful, optimistic book and an indispensable document for understanding this crucial period in Macau's history.

Whereas the Venetian is all about Old World fantasy, its neighbor on the strip, the City of Dreams, has leaped into the future.

The Macau government has gone to great lengths to also turn the city into an artists mecca such as the Fringe Festival pictured here during the annual parade from the St. Paul’s Ruins to Senado Square.

Formerly a sleepy fishing port, Macau has transformed itself at breakneck speed into an urban metropolis which is now one of Asia's premium leisure destinations. As de Sales Marques puts it in his introduction, "pockets of cosmopolitan sophistication now exist side by side with scenes of older, simpler, traditional living". In the book, Hartung zooms in from panoramic views of the city to focus on the architectural and human details which makes Macau such an intriguing, vibrant city.

"Documenting cultures in transition has always been one of my key concerns," says Hartung, a veteran photographer whose work has appeared in publications such as TIME, Newsweek and Forbes. "The photographs in Macau: Work in Progress chronicles this important, transformative moment in the city's history."

"David is simply put, an excellent photographer" says Mark Hammons, Managing Director of the Ignite Media Group. "He doesn't just capture moments. His photos seem to reveal something essential about the past, and the future. His work celebrates Macau's potential. We are very proud of this book."
