-- Stingray empowers enterprises and cloud providers with the elasticity, price performance, and service orchestration needed to effectively deliver applications to cloud customers

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Sept. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its recent analysis of the application delivery controllers (ADC) market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Riverbed Technology (NASDAQ: RVBD) with the 2013 North American Frost & Sullivan New Product Innovation Award for developing Riverbed® Stingray®, the first software-only ADC in the market. While competing vendors are retrofitting their physical ADC appliances into virtualized versions, the Riverbed Stingray ADC does not even have a hardware version. It was designed as software from the ground up for use in virtualized environments. This makes Stingray's ADC products fully portable and deployable in any data center or cloud environment.

From a service provider standpoint, the Stingray software-based ADC fosters uniformity in functionality and management, regardless of where the Stingray ADC is hosted -- in a private data center, a public cloud or in a hybrid environment. It also assures scalability, reducing the need for costly appliances to handle anticipated traffic and eliminating the need for multiple pricing models.

"Built as software and designed to work in a cloud environment, Stingray easily integrates into Layer 7 of the application stack," said Frost & Sullivan Program Director Lynda Stadtmueller. "As Stingray products can be deployed and billed on a per-tenant basis, the cloud provider can offer Stingray's functionality as a value-added service, thus increasing revenue per customer."

The Stingray product family is made up of four products that can be deployed as software or as a virtual edition: the Stingray Traffic Manager, which is a full-featured ADC; Stingray Aptimizer, a Web content optimization platform; Stingray Application Firewall, a sophisticated application firewall for deeper application level security; and the recently introduced Stingray Services Controller, a platform for ADC-as-a-Service. Each product in the Stingray family can be deployed as a stand-alone solution or integrated with other Stingray products. In addition, to support the developer market, Riverbed launched a "developer edition" of Stingray, with a free download that can be used during development and test stages.

"Riverbed Stingray products represent a new approach to ADCs in the cloud. Riverbed has uniquely created a potentially influential cadre of supporters by targeting the developer community," noted Stadtmueller. "In this context, the Riverbed Stingray product family is poised to attract a broad and diverse clientele that includes enterprises, cloud service providers, and developers."
