Marimekko arrives in Beijing and Shanghai

Considered part of Finland's heritage, Marimekko is now bringing its bold colours and patterns to China. The company designs and manufactures high-quality interior decoration items ranging from furnishing fabrics to tableware as well as clothing, bags and other accessories.

Marimekko is renowned for its art of print making: pattern designs and fabric printing. Around 1.5 million meters of fabric is printed at the Marimekko House in Helsinki every year. Marimekko is rooted in pattern design, with a number of designers introducing new patterns quarterly. Generally, one pattern takes around one year from the concept development to production of final product. Each pattern is the result of hard work by the designers and the in-house design team.

Marimekko's classic patterns include the iconic Unikko poppy print designed by Maija Isola for Marimekko in 1964. Other patterns such as Kaivo (dwell) from 1964, Isot Kivet( big stones) from 1956, Lokki (seagull) and Joonas (jonah) both from 1961 were also designed by Isola. She was inspired by folk art, nature and her traves abroad.

In June 2013, the first Marimekko store in China opened at Taikoo Li South, Sanlitun in Beijing. Situated alongside a fountain, the store has attracted countless customers with its bold colours and patterns.

In August 2013, Marimekko's second store opened at the recently established iAPM Mall in Shanghai. Since opening a store in Hong Kong last year, the brand has quickly established its presence and built a distinctive brand image with its unique design. Besides the existing stores in Beijing Shanghai and Hong Kong, Marimekko will continue to expand its operations in China and intends to open a total of 12 stores and shop-in-shops by the end of 2016.

Marimekko brings the Finnish lifestyle, representing the mix of east and west and marrying the simplistic, graphic, clean style from Scandinavia with the rich, ornamental and bold expression from the Slavic countries. And most importantly, every designer applies their own perspectives to the brand. Through the application of bold colours and patterns, Marimekko aims to create aesthetic experience for every moment in life for people.
