SEOUL, South Korea, Feb. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- POSCO E&C (Vice President Jeong Donghwa) announced on January 26 that it had won the second-stage project for a sewage treatment plant in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, as awarded by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of City Construction and Investment, Vietnam.

The total project volume is US$ 120 million (KRW 130.5 billion) with POSCO E&C's share estimated at US$ 70 million (KRW 74 billion). The timescale of construction will be 54 months.

The second-stage project was pushed ahead after it was found that the existing 141,000-ton capacity plant was incapable of treating wastewater discharged from the increasing number of residents in Ho Chi Minh City, which has grown into the economical capital of Vietnam.

The new project is to build additional facilities capable of treating 328,000 tons of sewage water. Once the construction is completed in 2018, the sewage treatment plant will be able to treat 469,000 tons of wastewater per day.

This is estimated to be equivalent to the volume of wastewater discharged from one million households in Ho Chi Minh City. The city authorities expect that the new facilities will help substantively improve the water quality of the Tac Ben Ro River in Ho Chi Minh City.

For this project, POSCO E&C formed a global dream team together with the world's leading water treatment companies.

POSCO E&C's French partner is OTV, a subsidiary of the world's leading water treatment company VEOLIA which has a broad range of experience in environmental fields including water treatment, seawater desalination and the utilization of water resources. Its Japanese partner is Hitachi, which is very strong in the field of sewage and industrial wastewater treatment.

POSCO E&C is the leading construction company in the domestic water environment field. It was ranked 1st in the domestic water environment industry last year, awarded orders worth over 300 billion won in total.

In this project, POSCO E&C will be responsible for civil engineering and construction works. OTV will take charge of water treatment equipment supply and installation and Hitachi will be in charge of sludge equipment procurement and installation.

POSCO E&C, OTV and Hitachi will share the project by 57%, 32% and 11% respectively.

"This project is the result of our effort to discover new opportunities in overseas markets, rather than remaining solely within the saturated domestic environmental market," said Cho Yongseok, POSCO E&C Director.

POSCO E&C plans to leverage this project to expand its presence within the global water treatment market, including Vietnam.
