An art, cultural and social destination in Hong Kong offering authentic Cantonese cuisine and vintage cocktails
HONG KONG, June 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Duddell's, the cultural and social destination located in the heart of Hong Kong's Central shopping district, is a must-visit for every traveller to the city. Since opening in May 2013, Duddell's has received much acclaim including a coveted Michelin Star for excellence after only 8 months. It is established as the go-to venue for celebrity and creative minds.
Founded by three of Hong Kong's most influential young minds, Yenn Wong, Alan Lo, and Paulo Pong, Duddell's is neither museum nor gallery - it is an inspiring backdrop against which ideas are shared and developed, connecting art and people in a new way.
Set over two stories with a dramatic travertine staircase joining the two spaces, Duddell's combines a vibrant, chic Dining Room downstairs with a more casual and intimate upstairs Salon and Library complete with a lush Garden Terrace. With interiors as noteworthy as the art on its walls, entering Duddell's feels like being welcomed into the eclectic home of a great art collector - one that also happens to have an in-house Michelin starred Cantonese chef and sophisticated salon with artisanal cocktails and vintage champagne.
Serving authentic Cantonese cuisine is Michelin starred Executive Chef Siu Hin Chi. With a wealth of experience and remarkable culinary skills, he uses seasonal ingredients to pay homage to Cantonese cuisine by keeping the original textures and flavours of traditional dishes. The dishes presented with a modern flair, matching the arty flair of Duddell's, creating an exclusive dining experience. Chef Siu's combination of the best ingredients and complex techniques ensures the delivery of exceptional authentic dishes which excite the taste buds of even the most demanding epicure.
Downstairs in Duddell's Dining Room, Chef Siu's menu starts with a wide selection of dim sum for lunch along with signature dishes such as Fried fresh lobster, scallion and shallots, Pan-fried fresh crab claw with caviar, Fried beef cube with wasabi and soy sauce, Crispy salted chicken and Sautéed asparagus, water chestnut and macadamia nut in taro nest. Upstairs at the Salon and Library, guests can order a selection of dim sum, rice and noodle dishes from the kitchen all day. The Garden Terrace is a space for conversation and contemplation over tea, cocktails or wine. The relaxed garden-lush setting offers an oasis in the midst of the bustling city.
The wine list is hand-selected by Duddell's co-founder and wine expert Paulo Pong focusing on classic old world wines with mature and drinkable vintages. Featuring prominently on the wine menu is a selection of Bordeaux First Growths and other notable producers such as Château Mouton Rothschild, Oliver Bernstein, Jean-Jaques Confuron and J .L. Chave.
Conceived as the perfect instrument to enable other events and experiences to happen, the interior architecture and design are by London-based Ilse Crawford - awarded AD Spain International Prize 2013 for Contribution and Influential Work in Architecture, Design and Interior Design. Designer of Soho House NY and The Olde Bell, Ilse Crawford is widely recognised for developing a humanistic approach that works on all scales.
Duddell's also features a number of extraordinary exhibitions by the prominent artists. Downstairs in Duddell's Dining Room display A Taste of the Masters: Paintings from the M K Lau Collection, an exhibition co-curated by Catherine Maudsley to showcase the work of China's most influential ink and brush painters of the 20th century. Drawn from the distinguished collection, the show includes more than 60 works of art from over a dozen masters in the medium including Wu Changshuo, Qi Baishi and Zhang Daqian. In the upstairs Salon, contemporary art exhibitions, changing quarterly, bring a dynamic vibrant atmosphere. The best of international modern and contemporary art is showcased, with many on special loan from distinguished private collectors. From May to September 2014, the Salon showcases the exhibition 'Aftermath: Post-Sense Sensibility, Fifteen Years On', co-curated by Philip Tinari, Director of Beijing's Ullens for Contemporary Art.
Duddell's features a year round art programme spearheaded by cultural leaders Yana Peel, William Zhao, Chrissy Sharp and co-founder Alan Lo. The programme includes world class exhibitions curated by prominent art personalities as well as a continuous series of discussions, performances, film screenings and other events by Hong Kong's cultural innovators.
Duddell's combines traditional delicacies, stylish decoration and modern art, creating a unique and extraordinary dining experience. It is a venue for the appreciation of beauty in art and food.
