First established in 1986, the Shanghai TV Festival has grown into one of the most prestigious international television events in Asia. Two years after its founding, the Magnolia Awards were established as the festival's core honors, representing the highest standards of artistic excellence and international recognition. As the benchmark awards of the Shanghai TV Festival, the Magnolia Awards have long served as a guiding force for outstanding storytelling, creative innovation and cross-cultural exchange.

The awards continue to celebrate excellence in the radio, television and online audiovisual industries while embracing new forms of storytelling and the evolving global media landscape.

A centerpiece of the program was the Magnolia Forum, "AI-Driven Road to Premium Micro-Dramas," held on June 23 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center. The event brought together regulators, platform executives, industry experts and frontline creators to discuss how artificial intelligence is transforming micro-drama production while maintaining storytelling quality and creative standards.

The forum recognized six outstanding micro-dramas: Inside and Outside the Home, Miracle, Flash Marriage Rose, Summer Fendera, Tang Dynasty Strange Tales and Zhuquetang. Representatives from the productions shared their creative experiences, emphasizing that strong screenwriting remains the foundation of high-quality micro-dramas.

Industry leaders outlined the sector's rapid expansion. Tencent Video reported that its micro-drama user base has surpassed 120 million, with per-capita viewing time increasing by 32 percent year over year. In 2025, the platform released more than 180 horizontal-screen short dramas, with 17 projects generating more than 10 million yuan each. By 2026, nine projects had already exceeded the 10-million-yuan mark, including two that surpassed 20 million yuan and one that exceeded 30 million yuan.

Artificial intelligence emerged as the dominant theme of the discussions. Speakers noted that AI-assisted production has become widely adopted across the sector, improving efficiency in script development, production and post-production while enhancing rather than replacing human creativity. As one producer put it, AI handles the heavy lifting, allowing them to focus on human stories.

The forum also highlighted the international expansion of Chinese micro-dramas. Industry representatives noted that Chinese short-form productions are attracting growing overseas audiences, while advances in AI translation and content generation are lowering barriers to international distribution and cross-border collaboration.

Chen Guo, Managing Director of the Shanghai International Film & TV Events Center, said the festival's expanded focus on micro-dramas reflects both the industry's rapid growth and the need to encourage higher-quality production standards, with the aim of helping the sector move from an era of scale toward one of premium content.

The initiatives unveiled at this year's STVF underscore China's efforts to advance the high-quality development of micro-dramas through technological innovation, industry collaboration and international exchange, further consolidating its position as a global leader in short-form content.

SIFF PROJECT is a film incubation platform connecting filmmakers with producers, investors and industry partners for development and financing. SIFF ING focuses on new storytelling and experimental expression, offering creators opportunities to showcase original works. SIFF YOUNG supports young filmmakers through selection and development programs in directing, screenwriting and producing.

Among these initiatives, the SIFF YOUNG × Shanghai Young Filmmaker Support Program unveiled its 2026 cohort, marking its fifth anniversary. Under the theme "The industry nurtures new talents, and new talents give back to the industry," nine filmmakers were selected: screenwriter Zhou Yunhai; producers Hu Jing, Ti Ti and Xie Haochi; and directors Bai Xue, Su Biao, Teng Congcong, Wang Wang and Xu Lei.

Founded in 2021, SIFF YOUNG has become an influential filmmaker support program, identifying and empowering emerging talents in screenwriting, directing and producing. Over five years, the program has supported 29 young Chinese filmmakers.

The 2026 cohort reflects the diversity and vitality of China's emerging filmmaking community. Zhou Yunhai co-wrote Pegasus 3. Producers Hu Jing, Ti Ti and Xie Haochi have backed acclaimed works including The Cord of Life, the Venice Main Competition title The Sun Rises on Us All, and the upcoming MAKE ZHONGHE GREAT AGAIN. Directors Bai Xue, Teng Congcong and Wang Tong, alongside independent filmmaker Xu Lei, have earned industry recognition, while screenwriter-turned-director Su Biao explores stories rooted in Chinese culture.

Opening Film Afterpiece Makes World Premiere

This year's opening film, Afterpiece, made its world premiere as one of the festival's most anticipated events. Directed by Keane T.K. Wong and produced by Derek Yee, the film stars Stephen Fung, Chrissie Chau, Myolie Wu and Angela Yuen. The story follows a once-celebrated theatre director seeking creative redemption while navigating the increasingly blurred boundaries between performance and reality.

Developed under a Hong Kong film mentorship initiative pairing established filmmakers with emerging directors, Afterpiece reflects the continued transmission of creative talent across generations in Hong Kong cinema.

International Jury Reflects Global Vision

Members of the Golden Goblet Awards jury met with the media in Shanghai ahead of this year's festival activities, representing filmmakers and industry professionals from around the world.

The seven-member Main Competition jury is chaired by acclaimed actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai and includes Chinese director Guan Hu, actress Xin Zhilei, Tunisian producer Dora Bouchoucha, Kyrgyz director Aktan Arym Kubat, Georgian filmmaker Déa Kulumbegashvili and Mexican director Fernanda Valadez.

This year, SIFF received approximately 4,100 submissions from 125 countries and regions, setting a new record in the festival's history. Among nearly 3,000 eligible entries, 82 percent are world or international premieres, underscoring the festival's growing global influence and appeal.

Audience enthusiasm remained strong, with online ticket sales launching on June 5 and 250,000 tickets sold within the first 15 minutes.

As a shining cultural icon of Shanghai, Shanghai International Film & TV Festival has, over the past 30 to 40 years of steady growth, evolved into a premier exchange platform that connects global vision, empowers the industry, and engages audiences at scale. In 2025, the 27th SIFF drew over 3,900 submissions from 119 countries and regions, with an impressive 77% world premiere rate among the Golden Goblet Award entries. Screenings took place across 48 cinemas - including venues beyond Shanghai - showcasing 410 titles. Nearly 100 audience meet-and-greets brought filmmakers and filmgoers together, drawing close to 500,000 admissions. Meanwhile, the 30th STVF received nearly 1,000 entries from 43 countries and regions, while the Magnolia Awards Ceremony commanded nearly 40 million live-stream views.

For the upcoming 2026 Shanghai International Film & TV Festival, Tong Ying offered a concise preview: "A vibrant lineup of events and a host of exciting highlights." She added that the festivals "will stay true to their core values - professionalism, global reach, creative vision, and public engagement - as we continue to build bridges between Chinese and international film and television communities."

Take the industry segment, for example. At its core, the International Film & TV Market will operate on twin engines - exhibitions and industry events - integrating forums, project pitches, deal-making, and more into a tightly focused industry matrix. A special emphasis will be placed on nurturing emerging talent, with initiatives such as the SIFF Project, SIFF NEXT, SIFF ING, and SIFF YOUNG serving as launchpads for young creators. Technological frontiers will be pushed through dedicated sections, including "AI Backlot", SIFF XR and Sci-Fi Film Week, expanding the possibilities of cinematic language and craft. New trends - from Micro-dramas to IP adaptation - will be explored through incubator programs and in-depth forums, positioning SIFF at the forefront of content evolution. And with a global outlook at its heart, a diverse array of exhibitions, presentations, and networking sessions will weave an open and inclusive international cooperation network. Currently, submissions for the Golden Goblet Awards and screening, the Magnolia Awards (TV dramas (China) and variety programs), and the International Film & TV Market booth application (early-bird) remain open until March 31.

Also worth noting: this May, SIFF and STVF will launch their first-ever special exhibition at Shanghai Film Art Center. Curated from over 500 treasured exhibits and enriched by original works and interactive installations from renowned artists, the exhibition traces the festivals' luminous journey through four distinct lenses - trailblazers, industry players, cinephiles, and the unsung heroes behind the scenes. It's a sweeping tribute to the milestones and memories that have defined the festivals since their inception.

"Our collaboration with Hong Kong's film and television industry runs deep - and the results speak for themselves." Tong Ying remarked at the promotional event. She highlighted the close partnership between SIFF and the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency of Hong Kong in recent years, as well as the ongoing, good-faith collaboration between STVF and Hong Kong's film and television organizations. This year, SIFF will once again present the "Making Waves Navigators of Hong Kong Cinema" section, a dedicated showcase spotlighting emerging Hong Kong talents alongside restored classics - a testament to the city's enduring creative vitality. "Looking ahead," Tong Ying added, "we aim to deepen exchanges between filmmakers on both sides and further integrate our industries, as we write the next chapter of Chinese-language screen storytelling together."

On the big screen and the small - across the editions of SIFF and STVF - the brilliance of Hong Kong's finest film and television talents has always shone through. "SIFF is a place where things actually get done - where ideas turn into action," said See Yuen Ng, who attended the event in person. A former jury member of the 3rd SIFF Golden Goblet Awards, he spoke from the heart: "Over the years, whenever time permits, I make a point of coming back - for panels, for industry gatherings, for the conversations that matter." Such a platform, he reflected, is indispensable to the evolution of Chinese-language cinema. The festival, he noted, has become a vital bridge for Shanghai-Hong Kong film collaboration. After serving as a member of SIFF Project Annual Focus Committee at the 2025 SIFF, Chan Mou Yin Anselm left with one clear aspiration: to return soon with a project of his own. He encouraged fellow Hong Kong filmmakers, especially the younger generation, to look to SIFF as a gateway to the mainland. "It's a chance to connect, to exchange ideas," he said. "I've been to many festivals around the world. SIFF has something special. Everyone here genuinely wants to help." He added, "I'm working on a script right now. I hope that my next film will have its moment here in Shanghai."

"Chinese-language dramas need to keep moving forward - and that requires more exchange, more collaboration," said director Chung Shu Kai, a regular participant at STVF. "Great stories know no borders." He spoke with quiet conviction: "For me, what draws me back isn't the buzz – it's the chance to see where the industry is heading, how it's evolving. That kind of dialogue is invaluable."

First established in 1986, the Shanghai Magnolia Awards have grown into one of the most prestigious honors in China's television and film industry, representing the highest standards of artistic excellence and international recognition. As the core awards of the Shanghai TV Festival, the Magnolia Awards have long served as a benchmark for outstanding storytelling, creative innovation, and cross-cultural exchange.

Now, stepping into its 30th edition, the awards not only reflect on a proud legacy of excellence but also embrace a forward-looking spirit—recognizing the power of television and film to inspire, connect, and transcend borders in a rapidly evolving media landscape.

Chen Guo, Managing Director of the Shanghai International Film and TV Events Centre, remarked, "The launch of the International Film & TV Market is significant in drawing global attention to China. Today, China is the largest film market in the world. Through this new platform, we hope to showcase China's openness and readiness to engage with the global community."

The market bridges creativity and commerce, featuring numerous global exhibition areas and attracting both local and international film enthusiasts. It offers a unique blend of interactive experiences—from co-creating artwork with illustrators and exploring vintage film memorabilia to collecting themed merchandise and engaging with fan-favorite IPs. This allows film lovers of all ages to experience the magic of cinema up close while bringing together both seasoned professionals and new enthusiasts.

High-level forums convened thought leaders from across the creative spectrum. The "Open Mic for Industry" session became a knowledge hub where experts in content distribution, legal services, and film technology shared insights on short-film export strategies, intellectual-property safeguards, and smart-bionic animation tools.

The Film Translation and Communication Summit focused on the National Multilingual Film Translation and Production Base. Experts discussed cross-cultural strategies to expand Chinese content globally, highlighting innovations in translation and international communication. Innovations in translation and international communication were explored, emphasizing how AI and new technologies are reshaping global film exchanges.

The Yangtze River Delta Film Production Service Cooperation Alliance expanded its reach, emphasizing the importance of regional collaboration in boosting high-quality film and TV production. The alliance now includes members from across the nation, addressing the evolving demand for comprehensive service solutions in the film industry.

The 2025 Shanghai International Film & TV Market ushers in a new era of global collaboration, creativity, and industry growth. This year, a special CINEMART was also set up, open to the public, further enhancing the market's accessibility and global appeal.

At the awards ceremony, 49 entries competed in the five major categories of the Golden Goblet Award. As the eight major awards of the Golden Goblet Award's main competition section were successively announced, the Kyrgyzstan film BLACK RED YELLOW won Best Film. Actor José Martins was awarded the Golden Goblet for Best Actor for his role in the film THE SCENT OF THINGS REMEMBERED. Actress Wan Qian was awarded the Golden Goblet for Best Actress for her role in the film WILD NIGHTS, TAMED BEASTS.

By integrating culture, commerce, and tourism, the Shanghai International Film Festival has created new entertainment-driven consumption opportunities, further energizing this cosmopolitan city's vibrant economy. Tomorrow marks the final day of screenings, and the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival will draw to a close on June 22.

In the Main Competition, heavyweights like Cao Baoping's ONE WACKY SUMMER, Qiu Sheng's MY FATHER'S SON, and Wang Tong's debut WILD NIGHTS, TAMED BEASTS demonstrate the industry's ability to blend artistic vision with commercial appeal. Meanwhile, the Asian New Talent section highlights emerging voices: Bian Zhuo's AS THE WATER FLOWS, Cheng Liang's ODDS BEATER, Qiu Yujie's SEVEN DAYS, Shi Renfei's THE LAST SUMMER, and Fang Liang's WATER CAN GO ANYWHERE, prove that the next generation of Chinese-language filmmakers is ready to carry the torch of this cinematic powerhouse.

Among those movies, AS THE WATER FLOWS delves into the complexities of parent-child relationships and inter-generational conflict. "This film resonates deeply with every family," Actor Li Zhenping said, "Audiences may interpret it differently, but they share a common hope: for their own families to grow better and more fulfilling." Director Cheng Liang tackled the ubiquitous subject of China's national college entrance examination, the gaokao, in his movietic work "ODDS BEATER." He said: "We focus on the gaokao but go beyond merely depicting it. Unlike some typically rousing stories, we employ a more nuanced approach to conveying the dilemmas."

Beyond the competitions, SIFF also features the Chinese Movie Blockbuster Showcase, where nine movies were unveiled, including: DONGJI RESCUE, STRANGE TALES OF LIAOZHAI: LANRUO TEMPLE, A COOL FISH 2, GIFT FROM A CLOUD, THE LYCHEE ROAD, ASSASSIN IN RED 2, MAN HUANG JIN DI, ECHOES OF ENCOUNTER, and I KNOW WHO YOU ARE. These films collectively showcase the diverse grandeur of Chinese movie in 2025.

Guan Hu's DONGJI RESCUE, shot with IMAX technology, recounts a WWII rescue mission. Producer Liang Jing noted, "Many of them explored their untapped potential and made big breakthroughs in acting. Actress Ni Ni took special body building exercises for her character."

Furthermore, as an integral part of Chinese cinema, Hong Kong films have long been a driving force for innovation and exchange within the Chinese-language film industry. The festival also hosted the "Hong Kong New Power Projects Showcase" forum, focusing on industry collaboration and innovation. Meanwhile, the "New Opportunities for Southeast Asian and Chinese-Language Cinema" forum brought together producers and distributors from Hong Kong and across the region to explore co-production opportunities and cross-border marketing strategies. As Mr. Mak Sing Hei said: "As an important platform for promoting cultural exchanges in the film industry, the Shanghai International Film Festival has always been actively involved, hoping to provide opportunities for the display and development of Hong Kong film works and talents."

On June 13, SIFF brought together the full international jury of the Golden Goblet Awards Main Competition, representing 13 countries and regions across Asia, Africa, the Americas and Europe. They appeared together on stage and spoke to the press, reflecting the festival's global reach and cultural diversity.  World-renowned Italian filmmaker Giuseppe Tornatore will chair the jury panel of the Main Competition section, he said: "Film is the love of everyone and I hope these selected movies can really surprise and enchant me. I think the best of these works are sure to touch the hearts of each jury member."

The Red Carpet of the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival Gala Night is scheduled for the evening of June 14.

Tickets in High Demand, Red Carpet Dazzles

The festival offers a symphonic poem of classics and contemporary works from both domestic and international cinema, featuring nearly 40 different sections for film enthusiasts. On the day tickets went on general sale, more than 1,500 screenings of over 400 films with approximately 30% presented in 4K resolution were made available to filmgoers. Among them, 92 films with over 600 showings sold out quickly.

To meet overwhelming demand from filmgoers, SIFF opened ticket sales for additional screenings at noon on June 11, adding 7 new showings to the lineup. By that time, ticket sales had reached 459,600, achieving a record-breaking sell-out rate of 73%, with more than 30% of attendees traveling from outside Shanghai. The screening featuring the Golden Goblet Best Director winner sold out in just 26 seconds, with tickets available before the winner was announced. This left filmgoers in suspense about which film they would be watching until the reveal.

This year's film festival dazzled on the red carpet, attracting over 200 distinguished guests from around the world along the Huangpu River, offering audiences a captivating visual feast where cinema meets charm. The film crew of the opening film, She's Got No Name, along with the creators of upcoming summer blockbusters such as Dongji Island, A Cool Fish, The Litchi Road, and The Shadow's Edge, will be joined by the nominees from the Golden Goblet main competition and the Asian New Talent Award. Over 200 international stars, including the judges of the Golden Goblet Awards, will gather by the Huangpu River on the evening of the 14th. On June 17, the 2025 Chinese Movie Blockbuster Showcase will highlight major domestic productions.

The festival's international jury includes 21 members from around the globe. One of the participating directors, Miriam Heard, whose film After the Fog is a finalist, shared:

"My father visited China in 1975 and always dreamed of returning. He passed away recently, and I had the chance to show him the final cut of this film. I dedicate this movie — and my journey to China — to his memory."

A Truly Global Stage for Cinema

This year's Golden Goblet Main Competition showcases three Latin American films—After the Fog, Cyclone, and The Reborn—a first for the festival. It also spotlights the UK and Turkey with dedicated national focuses.

"I am truly gratified to see young creators infusing Chinese cinema with fresh perspectives and innovative expressions, bringing it vibrant new life. Through our diverse support mechanisms and platforms, these talented individuals not only find opportunities to showcase their work but also amplify their voices globally, promoting the international spread of contemporary China's multiculturalism and social transformations. I deeply value the mission of connecting Chinese cinema with the global film community, helping Chinese films gain an increasingly significant presence on the world stage." said Chen Guo, Managing Director of Shanghai International Film & TV Events Center.

The International Film & TV Market will be held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center from June 21 to 25. It is expected to attract 200 exhibitors from 15 countries and regions, showcasing cutting-edge technology and collaboration opportunities. For the first time, the newly launched International Film & TV Market area will be open to the public free of charge.

As China's only A-list film festival, SIFF has long served as a major platform for Chinese-language cinema and emerging talents across Asia. Guided by the principles of "Asian, Chinese Film, and New Talents," this year's festival is expected to feature around 60 Chinese-language films, spanning competition entries, premieres, and restored classics.

The Golden Goblet Awards continue to grow in global stature, setting a new record this year. The five competition sections received over 3,900 submissions from 119 countries and regions. Of those, more than 2,800 films entered competition, with notable increases in entries from the Americas and Africa. Short film submissions rose 18% year-over-year.

This year also boasts the highest premiere rate in SIFF history: over 1,820 films hold world premiere status, and more than 520 will have their international premiere, pushing the combined premiere rate above 80%.

The international jury panel includes 21 members from 13 countries and regions across Asia, Africa, the Americas, and Europe. Italian director and screenwriter Giuseppe Tornatore, the president of the jury this year, stated:

"A film festival is not just a celebration of cinema; it's an opportunity for people from different nations to come together, exchange ideas, and appreciate exceptional films. I'm honored to serve as a juror at SIFF and to enjoy these incredible works alongside my fellow jury members in Shanghai."

This year's edition also introduces several firsts: the merger of the SIFF Film Market with the Shanghai TV Festival's market to form a unified International Film and TV Market; the launch of the "Asia Now" section highlighting regional perspectives.

Tickets for the 27th SIFF go on sale at noon on June 5. Following SIFF, the Shanghai TV Festival will run from June 23 to June 27.
