SINGAPORE, Nov. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- In conjunction with the book launch of "Neither Civil Nor Servant", an authorised biography of its chairman Mr. Philip Yeo; Economic Development Innovations Singapore Pte Ltd (EDIS) is pleased to announce that it has raised over S$250,000 from pre-launch book sales and private donations for the EDIS Cares Fund.
EDIS Cares is the primary Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of EDIS to give back to the Singapore community. This initiative creates opportunities for children from low income families[1] in Singapore to reach their full potential through special programmes designed to inspire and build self-confidence as well as identify and address learning challenges. These include the Early Learning Programme, an intervention programme for 6 to 7 year-olds who have yet to attain the required literacy and numeracy levels; as well as iShine -- a thematic, hands-on exploratory learning programme that seeks to uncover children's hidden talents and newly sparked interests.
EDIS Cares actively engages volunteers and corporations outside of EDIS to personally and collectively make a difference. Since 2014, EDIS Cares has worked with over 140 volunteers and 17 partner corporations to impact over 200 children.
"Over the last 3 years, EDIS Cares has been a catalyst to make a difference in the lives of more than 200 underprivileged children in Singapore. With this new fund, we hope to double the number of children, volunteers and partners that we reach within the next 3 years," said Abel Ang, Executive Director, EDIS.
Fundraising for EDIS Cares is ongoing and limited edition hard cover "Neither Civil Nor Servant" books, signed by Mr. Philip Yeo, will be given in appreciation of donations in excess of S$2,500. The EDIS Cares Fund is administered by the Community Foundation of Singapore, an Institute of Public Character.

OUR PROGRAMMES
1. Milk & Diapers - The right start from the very start
Our Milk & Diapers programme aims to provide the critical nutrition and care needed by infants and children up to 4 years old. We work with social workers to identify and monitor families that need such support. To break the cycle of sub-optimal nutrition that is prevalent in lower-income groups, caregivers are educated on how to provide the best nutrition for their families even on a tight budget.
2. Early Learning Programme - Enabling a good start in Primary School
The Early Learning Programme (ELP) is an intervention programme for 6-7 year-olds who have not yet attained the literacy and numeracy levels for their age group. Every Saturday, trained volunteers teach the children on a maximum 1 volunteer : 2 children ratio, using an in-house curriculum designed to also help children with learning difficulties. The children's progress is monitored through baseline, mid and year-end tests and shared with their parents. Specialist evaluations are sponsored for children suspected of learning difficulties, and we follow-up to ensure that they are placed in the right support programmes.
3. iShine - Be inspired to aspire higher
The iShine programme is a thematic, hands-on exploratory learning programme that takes primary school children beyond their school curriculum. Volunteers journey with the children throughout the year-long programme's different themes, spotting hidden talents and newly sparked interests. In so doing, we raise their confidence and encourage higher aspirations. iShine children have worked with architects and master-planners to "Design a City", experienced "A Day in the Life of a Scientist" with researchers and visited horse stables, the airport and other organisations in "When I Grow Up".
