Record Numbers Registered for the United Airlines Guam Marathon 2017

Record 4,300 Registered Runners for 5th Guam Marathon

TUMON, Guam, April 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 4,300 registered runners raced to the finish line at the 5th United Guam Marathon (UGM) – a record-breaking achievement. This is the first year for title sponsor United Airlines, which has served Guam's residents and visitors for 40 years. United Airlines VP Marketing Mr. Mark Krolick explained their excitement in becoming title sponsor, and that "United Airlines feels running and travel go hand-in-hand" at a press conference held on April 8.

Full marathon participants left the starting line at 3a.m., with male runner Hiroki Nakajima reaching the finish line first after with a time of 2:30:37. Female runner Sunghwa Ryu was first cross the finish line with a recorded time of 3:01:58. Half marathon winners were Shun Gorotani and Maria Yano, with times of 1:09:20 and 1:22:29 respectively.

Japanese participants reached record levels this year, with over 1,200 Japanese nationals participating in the 5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon, including Japanese Race Ambassador Ms. Naoko Takahashi. Participants from Korea also achieved record registration levels this year, and with around half of participants being non-U.S. or Guam nationality, UGM has become a truly international race.

"The United Guam Marathon is a great outlet for our visitors to experience our island paradise and for the local community to showcase our Håfa Adai spirit. The "Run In Paradise" United Guam Marathon prides itself on allowing participants to experience the Paradise of Guam by providing the opportunity to take in unrivaled views and the breathtaking ocean, Participants also had the chance to mingle with local residents, try the local delicacies and enjoy unique cultural experiences during their stay. To keep up their energy, runners tasted treats such as coconut candy, dried mango and apigigi at every mile along the racecourse. At the finishers BBQ beach party, they were invited to cool down in the special mist area, refresh their tired limbs in the sea, and feast on Chamorro cuisine.
