LONDON and BEIJING, Oct. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Shin Kong Place (SKP) celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Beijing department store with a revolutionary re-design created by London architects Sybarite. Since 2013, Sybarite has been gradually transforming Shin Kong Place, one of Asia's largest shopping malls into China's premier luxury department store. All seven floors are being reimagined to incorporate a tailored and timeless architectural language which will result in an iconic house of fashion.

"We've created a timeless architectural language for SKP which is carried throughout the store," said Torquil McIntosh, Co-Founder of Sybarite Architects. "Luxury brands are used to being more prominent than the store's identity, but the unparalleled success we have seen at SKP means that both the brands and the customer are seeing the benefits of the department store's redesign."

Sybarite captured the essence of the brand and imprinted it into the brand DNA, which has been holistically applied to SKP's new corporate identity and logo through the architecture and everything in between. Sybarite were inspired by art and Gothic architecture and tried to implement within a contemporary context through the SKP design. The pinched in columns meshed into the ceiling to allow for extra light into the space and is a typical cathedral-like feature. The SKP curve is not only found in the logo, but used in every cornerstone throughout the building.

"Thanks to Sybarite's work, customers of SKP will always be aware of the parent brand with the tailored style which runs throughout the store," said Michael Ferrera, Senior Director, Store Planning & Design, SKP, "The refurbishment and branding created by Sybarite will help further cement SKP's reputation as one of China's leading and most luxurious shopping malls, and we've already seen sales increasing significantly in all refurbished categories and we can't wait for visitors to SKP to enjoy a shopping experience like no other."

Unusual for similar projects in China, the project work was undertaken in staggered phases to allow the department store to continue trading. SKP's department store destination will continue to be regenerated over seven floors of retail space with the technology, sports and children's department and the restaurant all being re-shaped for opening over the next 18 months. Its successful redesign has also been recognised in the UK where Sybarite has been awarded a Queen's Award for its work in China.
