Beginning in Xiamen in 2016, the Cross City World Tour Xiamen competition, originating from World Cities Day, is jointly organized by Shanghai Coordination Center of World Cities Day and Pico Sports.

Cross City World Tour is similar to a treasure hunt in the city. Each mixed-gender team is made up of five members. Each route is connected with five coordinates, and team members have to collaborate on and complete tasks that involve thinking, creativity, and physical strength while searching for the next coordinates. The final ranking is based on the completion time.

Participants can enjoy themselves in the series of tasks, which include putting on firefighting gear, go-kart racing and puzzles. Many enterprises use this competition for their team building activities.

Cross City World Tour is targeted at the general public, especially young people, and it emphasizes participation, teamwork, common good and interaction. The different routes help participants learn more about Xiamen from different perspectives, and better learn about the beauty and spirit of the city.

In the years since its launch, the competition has won lots of support from hundreds of organizations in the city and many companies have applied to be the coordinates every year. According to Roy Luo, General Manager of Pico Sports, "Like a marathon, the city orienteering challenge goes out of the playground and into the city. A marathon is a track of 42.195 kilometers, while the city orienteering challenge has many different coordinates so as to a offer better experience for the participants with consolidated urban resources." Roy said that the city orienteering challenge can be replicated and the platform can be used to create many other business models. Xiamen is the first stop for this season and according to the organizer, the event will also be held in 6 to 8 other cities such as Shanghai, Hefei, Taiyuan, Chengdu, Luoyang and others.
