Organised by the Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTECC) through Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (MGTC), with an ambitious aim to drive the region's green economy, IGEM 2018 targets to generate RM2.5 billion in business leads and attract more than 30,000 visitors. It features 250 booths from over 30 countries.

Speaking about IGEM 2018, YB Yeo Bee Yin said, "Over the years, IGEM has played an increasingly prominent role in growing the nation's green agenda. It is aligned to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals in many ways, including to provide affordable and clean energy; industry innovation and infrastructure; and climate action by 2030."

"With growing influence, IGEM is well positioned to lead the region's green economy by providing a platform to showcase the latest sustainable technology developments and green business investments. IGEM 2018 is another step forward in the region's sustainable movement, bringing together delegates, speakers, financiers, trade members and other stakeholders from across the world to gain greater insight in creating sustainability solutions that are practical, proven and cost-effective," she added.

The first day of IGEM 2018 also marked the unveiling of Malaysia's 'Roadmap Towards Zero Single Use Plastic', which outlines the country's single strategy to holistically phase-out single use plastics through the adoption of a phased approach. The Roadmap looks to guide consumers in gradually adapting to more environmentally friendly options via economic instruments, education and awareness programmes.

During the launch of the Roadmap, YB Yeo Bee Yin said, "One of the keys to creating a greener future, lies in locking down plastic pollution. This roadmap helps us address the environmental impact of single use plastic by offering practical and proactive ways to the rakyat to lessen our plastics usage."

"While there may be some resistance to this change initially, I believe the roadmap will be beneficial to all stakeholders in the long-run. Hence, I urge everyone to support us in making this roadmap a success and join us in creating a Malaysia that is free of single use plastics," she concluded.

Over the next four days, IGEM 2018 will host a series of conferences featuring over 40 panel speakers from renowned organisations including EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EUMCCI), Capital Markets Malaysia (CM2), The Embassy of the Republic of South Korea, Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), The British High Commission, Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) and Malaysia Green Building Confederation (MGBC).

For the first time, IGEM will be playing host to the World Energy Cities Partnership – Mayors' Congress, organised by DBKL. This momentous event will see 4 Mayors and delegates from 11 member cities explore opportunities to incorporate environmental technologies to power green cities. Additionally, the inaugural National Energy Awards (NEA) is also part of IGEM 2018, to recognise and reward pioneers in the fields of energy efficiency and renewable energy.
