QuestMobile Chinese New Year Report: The Meitu App and BeautyCam Both Rank Top Ten for DAU Growth

XIAMEN, China, Feb. 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The recently released QuestMobile's 2019 Chinese New Year Mobile Internet Report shows that both the Meitu App and Meitu's BeautyCam rank in the top ten for Daily Active User (DAU) growth during the Chinese New Year between February 4 – 10, 2019. According to the report, the Meitu App's DAU increased by 36% during this period, while BeautyCam saw a 41.2% growth, compared to the same period last year. Pan-entertainment, social networks, and traveling apps prevailed in user growth during the holiday season.

"Receiving red packets, snapping photos, and using mobile maps while travelling were among the most popular activities during the holiday", according to the QuestMobile report. The Meitu App capitalized on the first two of these trends by introducing a wide array of innovative AR effects that are associated with traditional holiday customs. For example, BeautyCam partnered with Peppa Pig to launch Chinese New Year special effects, tapping into China's widespread enthusiasm for the character. BeautyCam also launched the Chinese New Year-themed MeiMoji, a personalized 3D animated avatar.

To meet users' demand to share their holidays with friends, the Meitu App also launched a WeChat mini program that instantly transformed their pictures into videos that could be shared directly as WeChat Moments.

The Meitu App has grown substantially since it began its transformation into an image-based social networking service in May 2018: it has seen a 20-fold increase in user activity in the first months of 2019.

Aside from Mainland China, the Meitu App in other markets has also made significant DAU gains in DAUother markets during the Chinese New Year. TheThe app's top 3 DAU growth regions were Malaysia (by 50%), Vietnam (by 44%), and Taiwan (by 24%).

Since its revamp, Meitu has launched a series of user engagement social campaigns with accompanying AR effects. For example, Meitu initiated a #TakePhotoswithBrown campaign on its social community to commemorate the arrival of LINE FRIENDS on the Meitu App in August 2018. The LINE FRIENDS effects offer users internationally renowned LINE FRIENDS characters like Brown and Cony as a series of customized AR filters and stickers for Meitu's Chinese users. The AR filters were used over 30 million times within two weeks, and more than 10,000 users took part in the #TakePhotosWithBrown campaign.

In November 2018, Victoria's Secret partnered with Meitu to launch customized stickers and the #TrainLikeAnAngel and #MyVictoriasSecretShow social campaigns for the 2018 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, bringing much Chinese fanfare to the globally famed event.

Meitu also collaborated with Sony Pictures Releasing International to create an eye-catching Venom-themed AR effect that allows users to transform into the iconic Marvel anti-hero with just one tap. On the Meitu App social community, the #COSVenom hashtag not only became popular with the app's female fan base, but also attracted the attention of a large number of male Marvel fans.

At the end of last year, the Meitu App launched its Anime Avatar feature, world's first Al-Based real-time avatar generator, to particularly cater to kawaii (cute) and cosplay culture enthusiasts. Users were given the opportunity to customize their unique avatars with hairstyles, clothing, and accessories, and then make cool videos or gifs with them. The feature has become a massive hit with views of the topic in the Meitu App's social community, reaching 3.6 million views under the #MyAnimeAvatar hashtag.

Another QuestMobile report, the annual China Mobile Internet Report that was released on January 23rd, 2019 showed that the number of active users in the photo/video app categories has exceeded 400 million and that there is a dramatic increase in user stickiness, with a 22% increase in average use time. The Meitu App and Meitu's BeautyCam app continue to occupy the first and second places in the category rankings, respectively.
