SINGAPORE, Oct. 17, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, global standards leader ASTM International announced that Singapore's National Additive Manufacturing Innovation Cluster (NAMIC) will join its Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence as a strategic partner.

ASTM International recently launched the center to support R&D that advances additive manufacturing standards. NAMIC will coordinate the center's R&D and related activities for the Asia-Pacific region, while also investing up to 2 million Singapore dollars (nearly $1.5 million USD) in the first two years.

Dr. Ho Chaw Sing, NAMIC's managing director, and Dr. Mohsen Seifi, ASTM International's director of global additive manufacturing programs, signed a Strategic Partnership Statement this morning at NAMIC's Global Additive Manufacturing Summit, part of Industrial Transformation Asia-Pacific, a Hannover Messe event attended by thousands of business and industry leaders. The signing took place after the summit's opening address by Dr. Lam Pin Min, Singapore's senior minister of state for health and transport, who witnessed the signing along with Ms. Choy Sauw  Kook, Assistant Chief Executive & Director-General, Quality & Excellence, Enterprise Singapore.

"We are excited to enter into this partnership with ASTM International," Dr. Ho Chaw Sing, NAMIC Managing Director said. "We look forward to catalyzing crucial research that helps establish technical standards, guiding additive manufacturing into the future for Singapore, Asia, and the entire world. Our investment into the center's regional-based activities will support implementation of additive manufacturing technologies globally."

NAMIC's partnership with ASTM International is the first in Asia, supporting R&D and standardization activities that will help drive commercialization of cutting-edge additive manufacturing technologies in Singapore's leading sectors such as aerospace, maritime and offshore, as well as logistics and fabrication.

"We are thrilled that NAMIC will be leading the Asia-Pacific's efforts to drive advancements and innovation in additive manufacturing on a global scale," said Seifi. "NAMIC's leadership in aerospace maintenance, repair, and overhaul, maritime and offshore, and other industries will complement the center's capabilities, and we are pleased to welcome additional investments in this world-class partnership which will accelerate standardization in this fast-growing field."

Founding partners of the center are Auburn University, NASA, manufacturing technology innovator EWI, and the UK-based Manufacturing Technology Centre. NAMIC and the U.S. National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) are the first two strategic partners.

Also, the center of excellence's video featuring these partners was unveiled at the event and on YouTube.
