The First-Ever Light Scheme in True London Style

HONG KONG, Nov. 14, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Partnering with The Crown Estate's Regent Street in London, the world-renowned Spirit of Christmas light scheme is arriving Lee Tung Avenue this Christmas, bringing a magical, festive celebration. Regent Street, the iconic shopping and dining destination in London, is the very first central London street to introduce festive lighting and decoration to Londoners in 1954. This year, it spreads the heart-warming tradition internationally for the first time ever, by partnering with Lee Tung Avenue. Lee Tung Avenue will play host to five of Regent Street's iconic Spirits along the boulevard from 16th November, to celebrate the festive season in true London style.

Christmas Kick-off on 16th November

The switch-on event on Regent Street will take place in London on the evening of 15th November, when the grand stretch of Regent Street will be traffic free from Oxford Circus to Piccadilly Circus, enabling visitors to the area to soak up the festive atmosphere amongst Regent Street's world-class shops and restaurants.

Following the Christmas kick-off on Regent Street, Lee Tung Avenue will be hosting a festive switch-on event on 16th November (Friday), featuring performances such as Christmas parade and themed programmes which will run till the end of the festive season, for visitors to enjoy during the most wonderful time of the year.

Originally commissioned by The Crown Estate, the fleet of spectacular large-scale 'spirits' are designed by leading British lighting creative, James Glancy Design. The scheme is designed as a beautiful festive installation for visitors to Regent Street and Lee Tung Avenue to enjoy during the 'most wonderful time of the year'.

Bringing a World-Class Art Piece to Hong Kong

William Chan, Centre General Manager of Lee Tung Avenue Management Company Limited, said, "The signature lighting at Regent Street is an annual Christmas tradition in London, not to mention how representative its switch-on ceremony is. We are honoured to be partnered with Regent Street this year, bringing a world-class festive lighting to the audiences in Hong Kong. I'm excited to see this collaboration; we will strengthen the name of being one of the best art and cultural destinations for tourists, both London and Hong Kong."

James Cooksey, Director of Central London at The Crown Estate, also added, "I'm proud that our lights will be making this international debut this year and to have established this partnership with Lee Tung Avenue, a location which is as well-known in Hong Kong, as Regent Street is in London. We know the amazing impact that our Christmas lights display has on shoppers in London and I'm thrilled that this year we will be bringing the spirit of Christmas to visitors to Hong Kong too."

About Regent Street

London's premier lifestyle destination, Regent Street and its adjoining streets stand out as the home of flagships and firsts. From global fashion retailers, such as Burberry, Coach, Michael Kors, J Crew, Kate Spade and Hunter, to the very best in beauty, wellbeing and fitness from Kiehl's and DryBy to Psycle and Rapha. Some of the city's most coveted food and drink destinations can be found on Regent Street and nearby, including dining hot spots Heddon Street and Swallow Street. From Gordon Ramsay's Heddon Street Kitchen and exclusive two Michelin star The Araki, to fine dining Italian at Frescobaldi and casual dining at Thomas's Cafe at Burberry. Regent Street's neighbours including Conduit Street, Mortimer Street, Great Marlborough Street and Brewer Street house some of London's best loved boutiques, independent stores and hidden gems.

In 1954, following an article in the Daily Telegraph that commented on how 'drab' London looked at Christmas, Regent Street became the first central London destination to introduce festive lighting and decoration for the enjoyment of the public. It was the retailers and businesses that made up the Regent Street association that organised and financed the first display. Both the lights schemes and the switch-on moments over the years have become firmly anticipated fixtures in the festive period in London.
