TEDA produces one out of four mobile phones made in China and one out of ten mobile phones made in the world. It became a major mobile phone manufacturing centre by attracting both mobile phones, spare parts and accessories manufacturers, forming a network of extensive production relationships on a turnkey basis. In recent years, TEDA's output surpassed 30% of the national total. As the biggest cluster for mobile communication enterprises in China, TEDA won itself the name of the "global capital of mobile phones".

The production scale of mobile phones in TEDA is in a leading position nationwide and TEDA is recognized as the state-level industrial park for mobile phones, chip components and integrated circuits and one of the largest production bases of display systems in China.

In 2006, the development momentum of TEDA's mobile phone industry was even stronger, with the output of mobile phones exceeding 100 million, reaching 105 million, up 53.3%, its total profit and profit rate both exceeded the levels of all provinces and cities in the country (i.e. surpassing Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, etc.), ranking first in the country.

TEDA's production capacity of mobile phones made a historic breakthrough by the use of a development mode characterized by relatively concentrated distribution of production capacity on one hand and the building of an industrial chain and formation of an industrial cluster on the other. These laid a solid foundation for industrial development and a great development potential. The world's leading mobile phone manufacturers including Motorola, Samsung and Sanyo have developed their production bases in Tianjin, producing a strong industry-assembling effect. More than 200 companies produce over 400 parts for Motorola, Samsung Electronic and other mobile phone manufacturers in TEDA and its surrounding areas, with a total production value of nearly RMB 20 billion. The mobile phone parts industry is also growing rapidly there.

In the future, TEDA will grasp the opportunities in the development of the nearby Binhai New Area and a new round of international capital transfer, strive to boost the upgrading of the regional industrial structure, realize transition from the general manufacturing industry to the high-end modern manufacturing industry, raise the added value of products through introducing and fostering projects that produce key parts for electronic communications and other sectors and expand regional radiation and influence. It is anticipated that TEDA's mobile phone industry will embrace more development space in the next five years and further contribute to the prosperity of the modern high-tech manufacturing industry in Binhai New Area.
