HONG KONG, Jan. 3 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- In the aftermath of the multiple earthquakes off the coast of Southern Taiwan on 26th December 2006, which resulted in major service outages and congestion of the Internet across the region, Asia Netcom successfully restored all of its customers' traffic along its EAC cable system on 27th December and continues to actively help the region get back online by allocating spare capacity to ISPs and third party telecommunications carriers.

"We were able to quickly restore all services to our customers because of the resiliency of our network," said Wilfred Kwan, Chief Technology Officer, Asia Netcom. "Leveraging the multi-ring architecture of our system, we were fortunate to have the ability to reroute traffic to other parts of the network and normalized services within a matter of hours."

In total, Asia Netcom's engineering team restored more than 100 Gbps of capacity on EAC, or equivalent to more than 20,000 broadband lines of capacity in the region. The majority of the traffic has gone to support Asia Netcom's customers with the remaining being provisioned to support the Internet bandwidth demands of the region's carriers and ISPs.

"We are doing everything we can to maintain connectivity for our own customers. At the same time, we are also delivering every extra circuit we have to the region's major carriers, so they can get the performance of their Internet infrastructure back to normal for the region's online users," Kwan added.

Asia Netcom's EAC cable system connects Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Taiwan, Japan, Korea and China. Its architecture is built on a four ring system with multiple layers of redundancy at every link, including full Span and Ring switching, as well as full equipment and route diversity. This design eliminates any single point of failure in the system and allows the network to restore services quickly following network impacts such as the Taiwan earthquakes last week.
