KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, Feb. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- The Hong-Kong based Alpha Southeast Asia magazine announced last week in Malaysia the winners of its annual Deal & Solution Awards 2011, which aims to recognise the best and most innovative corporate-centric investments and commercial banking solutions in the Southeast Asia region.
Thai coal miner, Banpu won the corporate award for Best Deal in Thailand 2011 for its THB15 billion (USD487 million) multi-tranche issue. As its inaugural public debt offering aimed primarily at retail investors, this was a landmark transaction for Banpu. Given the lack of awareness among retail investors in Thailand, Banpu hired the creme-de-la-creme of leading bond houses in Thailand, Bangkok Bank, KASIKORNBANK, Krung Thai Bank, and Siam Commercial Bank, who were also recognised at the awards ceremony for their contribution to the transaction as joint underwriters.
Some of the challenges faced were the size and tenor of the offering. Retail investors in Thailand are accustomed to investing in 3-year or 5-year tenors and very rarely consider long-tenor issues. The bond houses solved this problem by innovatively structuring several tranches of seven, 10, 12 and 15 years bonds, tailored to match different risk appetites of retail investors, co-operative investors, insurance companies, and pension funds.
